Rumor: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. development studio being shut down [Update]

[Update: The 1C blog has confirmed the closure.]

A rumor has popped up that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developer GSC Game World founder Sergei Grigorovich was going to shutter the studio and that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was canceled. The company issued a denial on Twitter, stating "No we have not closed GSC or cancelled #stalker2" - but the tweet was itself deleted, leading to even more speculation.

If that weren't strange enough on its own, an even wilder second-hand rumor states that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 generated "interest from one of the (Ukranian government) security agencies" regarding the Chernobyl area. which may have played a part in the suspected closure. According to one news source, "Given the sensitive nature of the Chernobyl area in which the series is based, government intervention would not seem inconceivably far-fetched."

GSC Game World employs roughly 40-50 people. Stay tuned for further developments in this bizarre story.

I've heard that he has blogged that it IS confirmed that GSC is closed and "Stalker 2" is now cancelled. Seems the updates are coming thick and fast.
Shame, I was looking forward to the sequel, though not so much that it was going to be multiplatform (even tho PC was primary).

There are whisperings that politics (Governmental that is) played a part. The Chernobyl setting being the problem.

This really sucks, Stalker was one of the best series of the last decade :(.

Well there's always "Metro: Last Light". Not nearly as appealing as "S2" but a consolation of sorts.
Still haven't played the two sequels to "Stalker", and I'll bet they'll be on a Steam sale (again) very soon.

Stalker really was a uniqe series, such a shame: I havent yet played any of the Metro games but as far is i understand they are basically traditional shooters.
They are worth it just for being developed by the same people but i havent found the time for them yet. I' prefer Stalker 2 over BF4-10 and over COD?-20 without any doubts.

Chosen One, are you saying that about Ukrainians just because they don't want to be dominated by Russians? I don't agree that Ukrainians are "strange" since I know a few of them and they seem very friendly and open-minded.

About the studios, I hope they won't end it here, but as always, governments like to have everything under control. Who knows what was the real reason, it can be anything - from tax evasion to historical misinterpretations.

No ) I'm sayng this because they still own us money for gas ^^

You Russians and your gas lines....always a matter for contoversy and sometimes outright warfare. I say this half-jokingly (don't want to get into politics here), but it really is quite a serious situatioon when a neighboring country loses powere for a week because of payment disputes.
Not saying that's the fault of Russia, as the countries involved share a common link - a complicated Gas agreement. To think the Eurozone has problems....
Once read a novel (which is still in my library) about a war between the Ulkraine and Russia, just after the fall of The Wall ("Night of the Haawk" - Dale Brown). The USA supported The Ukraine (quietly, black ops and all that), while Russia was seen as the big bad Black Bear.

BTW, Chosen. Have you seen "The Admiral" and "The Brest Fortress". Watched them over the last fornight. First one is a well made biograph of the Admiral who led the counter-revolutionary war in 1918, and the second one is the fortress that held against the Germans at the commencement of Barbarossa. Brilliant film.

Ukraine wants to oppose us. They dream to join in to NATO. How I must approach to them? They are Slavs as we and yet they are act like a traitors. We had very long common history, but, if they treat us like this, we'll treat them in no better way.

No I didn't watch em, although I'm pretty sure that somewhere I have those dvd's. U see, I do not like historical films just because it is a vision of producers and directors.

Chosen_One, the Balkans is full of Slavs who are entering NATO (some of them are already in). Kind of the mistake of Russia who helped the aggression on other Slavic countries back in 1990s :) I'm not saying your government helped with direct military support, but the political approach was very repellent for your "brother" Slavs here. And let's not forget the Russian volunteers who gladly participated in the aggression.

I'm afraid that Ukraine is repelled because of the same reasons. If your country was less hostile towards "brothers", I'm sure they would want to be your friends :)

But who cares, let's just live and be respectful toward each others. Tensions are pointless, it would be much better if everyone was just peaceful and forgiving.

In 1990's we had our own troubles here. USSR crushed and we do not have time for others.

Google search this:

РДО-1" and "РДО-2" (РДО stands for "Русский Добровольческий Отряд", which means "Russian Volunteer Unit", commanded by Yuriy Belyayev and Alexander Zagrebov.

Also, look up for this one: "Первая Казачья Сотня".

Then tell me you had no time for others ;)

USA destroyed Yugoslavia. And yet, some of U joined to NATO its a shame!!...UN peacekeeprs from Russia was there, it was an UN operation. Our government supported Serbs because they had majority and they were Orthodox Christian Slavs. But there wasn't even single solder from our army at all. It was diversion in your minds and of course NATO will tell U that the fault was on Russian hands. Russia in all times was guilty for everything in this world..so we just get used that everyone blames us, and we do not have any ally.

Look deeply in all things.

Please spare me of conspiracy theories. It was my mistake to enter this discussion, and I'm really eager not to continue this pointless comment spree. You have your own beliefs, you know better what happened to my country than I do. Russians are never guilty for anything, it's all NATO's fault, so we will all settle with that. God bless Russians because they are so good and peaceful.

Well...everything in what was up USA seems working...great for them, shame for us. NATO was bombard your country. Not us.
