Skyrim to influence Dragon Age 3's development

Bioware co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka has made an eye-opening revelation regarding the next chapter of the Dragon Age series - the next game will be going "in a different direction" and will have Bethesda's open-world roleplaying game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as a major influence.

“(The next Dragon Age) is gonna have the best of features from the prior Dragon Age games, but it’s also gonna have a lot of things I think players are gonna find compelling from some of the games that are out now that are doing really well with more of an open world feel. We’re checking (Skyrim) out aggressively. We like it. We’re big admirers of (Bethesda) and the product." said Muzyka in an interview with Wired.

Analysis: The original Dragon Age had some flexibility to its campaign, allowing players to choose which missions to start first much like Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic. The second game limited some of that freedom, however, making the game completely open world will increase the flexibility and complexity of the game world, but the story could suffer.

Let us know what you think.

Saw that yesterday, and I must admit it's not surprising. What is, is that Muzyka is upfront about it. Most would take the good bits, stamp their own brand on them and shrug off the controversy. Refreshing honesty.

Very good to hear they learned their lesson. The last game was constricted beyond all reason.

Pff, I don't believe that they could give us some AAA game. After ME 2 and DA 2 I completely lost my trust to them.

They could learn a thing or two from Bethesda.

I believe that when I see it. Skyrim is kicking the Dragon Age franchise butt so hard and long - effortlessly IMO to add to that - so no suprise.

With all that is the hype now I will soon be able to tell the world that I have mined iron ore over at Spriggan's rest while engaging in some homo-erotic relationship with my parrot by choosing the red text in next Dragon Age...

I no longer want something new - I want something OLD - I want something that works - I want a good system that when they say RPG actually feels like it.
They want to skip all the numbers and all that - fine - but then call it Drakes Age - the fantasy action and relationship game....

Well, for me and many other people ME2 was the game of the year in 2010, and I personally think it's better than Skyrim, mainly due to it having a great, immersive story. BW are known for making the best RPG's in the west, period. If they manage to combine their usual recipe for awesomeness with Skyrim's freedom without sacrificing storyline progression, they will grow tenfold in my eyes.

I agree with unsilviu on this one. Best of both worlds would make an absolutely brilliant game and i really hope they manage to pull it off.

No period at all - I would say that when it comes to RPG's they WERE the best - but now I don't know. The story was OK but nothing earthshaking and the romances and very limited dialogues in DA2 were abysmal.

Nothing gets even close to Viconia and Jeheira's love banters in BG2.
As far as settings goes - Dragon Age felt like a rehashed KOTOR and Dragon Age 2 felt like well - nothing much at all. Nice architexture and overall a nice graphic and intriguing design and part from the guy trying to rebuild his love - nothing much. The end was forced upon you and the paths were rather obvious. Dragon Age was ok - DA2 a huge let down.
if you take the Witcher and Witcher 2 you have a much more rich world and intriguing game.
ME2 was considered to be a shooter with RPG options by many of the first ME's fans ;) ME2 felt a wee bit like The Matrix part 2 - an action oriented interlude before the final. Soon we will find out how it ends.
For me - I'm not intrigued by the ME world and loosing my first saved didn't matter that much because even choosing the right ending and the game made a hiccup and you were off again. I can't say that I 3was impressed buy the story in ME2 - I still had fun playing the game and IMO ME is a stronger game series then Dragon Age by far.

EA destroying BW. ME was under MS and it was a Great RPG and DA:Origins was in dev-nt before EA acquire BW and it shot like bazooka to my heart I fell in love with those two games. So deep, so interesting, RPG firstly action secondly...but, it seems that today only Bethesda can make us Hardcore RPG fans happy...

CDProjekt RED would give Bethesda a run for it's money as far as "hardcore" RPG's go, as would GCS with "STALKER 2" if it was still going. Bethesda is more appealing to mainstream Western audiences, while the Eastern Europeans have RPG's and Flight Simulators at a whole other level.

IT all traces back to EA and DA2, it's obvious. I still like BW, the only dissapointment they've given me is DA2 and that's not really that bad is it?

They get ONE dissapointment :intense evil stare:

Hey Roderick, did you know "TOR" could have been "Game of Thrones Online"? It's one of the ideas they had when coming up with a MMO. Thankfully they went with Star Wars.

Well that would have been a relief indeed.

The other ideas were a "Lord of the Rings" MMO, a "Silmarillion" MMO, and a kind of a Gunslinger-esque "Dark Tower" MMO. "Star Wars" appears quite apart from these ideas.

Don't think Star Wars, think Knights of The Old Republic. One of those games that shows up on a lot of "should have a sequel" lists. Bioware also has basically it's own SW-based IP on the The Old Republic and can do whatever the hell they want with it.

So previously built reputation + popular fiction + creative liberty. Seems like a pretty good choice to me.

You know, out of all the weird glitches I've found in Skyrim, I recall Dragon Age 1 to have even more. In fact, one was so bad and made me so frustrated I said Screw it, and never finished the darn game! Just couldn't take it anymore.
Maybe one day I'll give DA2 a shot. When the price on it is $5 or so.

It's not terrible. I mean, at least you'll know exactly how to traverse the 5 rooms the game has, aside from the city :P) But seriously now, I wish ME had a smart-ass Shepard style. Making fun of everything was quite entertaining.

Just as an aside, I am really getting back into "STO" at the moment, re-specing my skills now that my 2 characters have maxed-out (get tokens to do so with subs). Still have Bridge Officers to deal with though, and tweaking my weaponry, auxillaries etc to perfection to be ready for the massive update coming with F2P.
if you get the chance to check it out, and are even mildy interested in the "ST" universe (or Sci-Fi in general) I urge you to do so. Join my Fleet, The Caspian Way.

I haven't started the Fleet, and it's a pretty new one. I used to belong to Starfleet Marines, then the admirals stole the "Fleet Bank" and ran off to start another one so we became The Terrahawks....now they're gone.
All truly weird, but being a member of one has the benefits of sharing equipment and other items in the Fleet Bank (not to mention Fleet events like taking on a Borg invasion armada).

Guys I've got a question and for some reason can't access the forums at the moment so thought I'd ask here -

If me and my GF really didn't like oblivion and just couldn't get into it, even though we do play a lot of RPG's, do any of you reckon we will like Skyrim?
By Chosen_One (SI Elite) on Dec 26, 2011

@Xifer 117

Well..My girlfriend didn't like all open RPG's but she likes Skyrim )

@Xifer I was bored of oblivion after the first 2-3 quests. I clocked about 60+ hours in Skyrim. It's the same general gameplay, an open-world sandbox with countless quests there to mainain a semblance of order, but without a tight, cinematic storyline, but it's much better done than in Oblivion. So yeah, you might like Skyrim.

I've heard people that did not like Oblivion at all say that they like Skyrim. So it's a possiblity at least.

For all the positive memories everyone seems to have of "Oblivion" now, at the time there were loads of detractors. Without a tonne of Mods I wouldn't have played for as long as I did, and even then what's closing a few gates compared with questing against dragons?
