A lawsuit brought against Square-Enix over alleged "hidden fees" for the MMO Final Fantasy XI has been dismissed by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The ruling was made last week on the 20th December. The lawsuit had been filed in 2009.
Plaintiff Esther Leong of San Francisco had filed a $5M suit against Square-Enix over "deceptive advertising, unfair business practices, and fraudulent concealment with respect to the online games at the point of purchase" in Final Fantasy XI.
In the press release from Square-Enix following the ruling, Deputy General Counsel of Square Enix Steve Ross stated, "We are very pleased with the Court's ruling. We feel vindicated since many of the allegations were patently false. We only wish plaintiffs had contacted our dedicated customer support for assistance before resorting to a lawsuit. Square Enix will defend itself against baseless litigation."
Final Fantasy XI was released on PC in 2002, the PlayStation 2 in 2004, and the Xbox 360 in 2006.
