Gamers who were frustrated by the classic strategy title X-COM: UFO Defense (or UFO: Enemy Unknown in European regions) being re-imagined as a first person shooter developed by 2K Marin now have a reason to celebrate, as XCOM: Enemy Unknown has been announced as a strategy game for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, which will be developed by none other than Firaxis Studios, the developer of Civilization.

Game Informer revealed the game as its cover story for the February 2012 issue, which will be hitting shelves on the 10th January.

According to the magazine, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is "a full-on strategy game that puts players in command of a global anti-alien defense force." As with the original title, the game requires both a worldwide perspective and a tactical mind. Players must identify threats on a global map while keeping national leaders and world populations calm, while having to engage in turn-based combat at a ground level as well. The game will have some next-gen features as well, such as destructible tactical environments.

"It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM," said Steve Martin, president of Firaxis Games. "We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."

XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be hitting shelves this Fall on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I dunno...I still can't get through "Civ 5" without crashing out at some point when the meeting a leader video starts to play. generally after about 5 turns. No video, no crash. They never fixed this.
As this is multiplatform, I will hold out uintil I know on this one. I haven't come across a good multi RTS yet.

I downloaded UFO Afterlight and I can't get the bloody God damn thing to start as it's fixed to 800x600 res and I can't see the save button when changing the res. Really God damn sweet... Can't play the bloody thing. Totally great game though. Played it before. A few times...
