Namco Bandai will bring Dark Souls to PC pending fan support

Dark Souls, the incredibly difficult spiritual sequel to Demon's Souls, may come to the PC platform if there is enough fan support for it, a Namco-Bandai rep has hinted in a forum post. This has inspired a fan petition that is as of now over 41,000 signatures strong.

A fan stated in the official Namco-Bandai forums regarding Dark Souls, "Anecdotal evidence may not be the best argument, but between all the PC gamers I know I have yet to hear one who wouldn't buy this game instantly if available on PC." Company staffer shoupinou replied, "There is always possibilities to have games adapted on PC and the good news is that Dark Souls is not a 100% typical Console game so the adaptation is possible. Now to make things happen, let's say the demand has to be properly done. someone to make a successful petition?"

This prompted an immediate online petition for a PC version of Dark Souls. The petition states, "Dark Souls is a critically acclaimed game, developed by From Software, known for its high level of difficulty and innovative online features. The problem? It's not on PC!

A port of this game has a high chance of being extremely successful for From Software and Namco Bandai. Given the sales of games such as The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and The Witcher, there is a large market for games like this. PC gamers love unforgiving, hardcore games.

A port may also mean that the area's in the game, such as Blighttown, won't suffer from slowdown. An online oriented video game is also perfect for the capabilities of a PC. Steam would also be suitable venue provided the game is sold at a reasonable price for a late port. Steamworks could provide a strong and easy to use online infrastructure. "

As of the 7th January, two days later, the petition has attracted well over 41,000 signatures.

Well there you. Somewhat niche in popularity, it would be a brace soul to take the game on. Petition signed:)

I've only heard good things about this game so i would not mind if it gets released on the PC as well :).

Actually signed it this morning, feeling very proud of myself ;)

HA! Dear Lord, they think Skyrim is unforgiving?! AH, my sides are splitting with laughter....oh, man. *wipes away tear*

Up to 45 500 signatures now. I really hope this gets their attention. Even a straight port with adapted controls would be awesome.

Lol, true, Skyrim isn't unforgiving at all, I defeated Alduin at level 20 without breaking a sweat. Witcher is, however, one the highest setting that deletes your save when you die :P. A friend of mine just finished it on the PS3 and, from what he tells me, Dark Souls is amazing. That, and

Demon's Souls? It wasn't that good. Dark Souls is a refinement of the game.

Yeah, I have no idea why you'd want the old version.

I've heard from many who've played both that "Demon's Souls" is still far and away the better of the two. I haven't played either, so personally I cannot say.
Just passing on whispers in the dark....

Ps. Everyone must have gotten out of the wrong side of the bed today. I have an excuse - the heat is murderous here. However you guys are dealing with the cold, which I much prefer.

Did I come off as grumpy? Sorry :)

Oh and I WISH it was farking cold. This is the warmest winter I remember. Annoying a hell.

You should try it here. Last night the air was so hot and still it was difficult to breathe let alone sleep. It was like walking in an oven around the house. Probably end up with a few cyclones just to top it all off, with dose of bushfires just for flavouring.

It's not as cold as you might think, not here in Romania at least. There have been 3-10 degrees throughout December and January so far, no snow, which is worse than -15 degrees and blizzards, in my opinion...(Speaking in Celsius, of course. )

Temperature today is around 279.13 degrees Kelvin.

Hehe. Always thinking, Roderick. Too hot to think here....brain shuts down quickly.
It's 6am on Thurs the 11th and it's already 301.15 Kelvin, as this seems to be our new way to measure temperature (28 celsius in the non-SI measurement). Another muggy, stifling day ahead. Rock on the air con!
By SirRoderick (SI Elite) on Jan 10, 2012

Kelvin has the best base of any temperature scale. 0 is the absolute bottom, physically impossible to get lower.

Fahrenheit is retarded, celsius is convenient in most applications.

Although absolute zero would have immense applications, it's currently thought impossible due to zero-point energy, though there have been temperatures of ~0.001 K. But it's finally 272.15 K here! Below the water freezing point! (For anyone who might not know the K system, 0 is absolute zero, no particle movement, as SirRoderick mentioned, and 273,15 is the freezing point of water.(0 Celsius)) How low does it get in Australia during your winter, hero?
By SirRoderick (SI Elite) on Jan 11, 2012
SirRoderick
Still 279 here.

And I'm quite aware of the possible impossible 0K. It's all very confusing when you get to the theoretics though. Zero point energy is not the xplanation I've heard though. It's the xlcusion principle (it is named after it's creator, but his name slipped my mind.)

Ultimately that states that no two particles can occupy the same energy level. One major application of that is that not one particle IN ALL THE UNIVERSE shares an energy level with another particle. My typing this keyboard is causing all the particles in the universe to adjust EVER so slightly, as to avoid that scenario.

That strange concept also means that there can only be one particle that is at absolute zero.

The name you're looking for is the Pauli exclusion principle ;)

But how the hell did we get from porting a game to the PC to discussing quantum mechanics??!

Also, thank you for Pauli :)

Wanna bet the publisher was working on the PC version long before they "suggested" a petition to bring it to PC? :p
By unsilviu (SI Core) on Jan 11, 2012

It would make for a very good PR story, them catering to the consumers and actually taking petitions into account (which never actually happens, from what I've seen)

A bit like the Publishers asking for, say 10,000 "likes" on Facebook and they will release a EP or something else. It's going to happen, they just want information on those who are purchasing or intending to.

No too intrigued by this. If it is a very unforgiving game and grinding this way don't sound like fun and getting the controls to be apt etc would be difficult.
But - it could be a new Severance - tough game to play but fun. A bit too tough though to be fun enough... IMO
By SirRoderick (SI Elite) on Jan 12, 2012
SirRoderick
It's not grinding, it's just difficult. Grinding is when you're forced to repeat monotoneous chores to get ahead in a game.

Something swTOR thankfully seems devoid of so far.
By nocutius (SI Elite) on Jan 12, 2012
nocutius
Really? The main thing that killed Lotro for me was the grind so if SWTOR has none or very little of it the fact pretty much makes it an obligatory item in one's library (when it gets slightly cheaper TM).

I've been doing nothing but quests so far, just reached level 12. I've done none of the heroics (although you could probably even solo the 2 man ones) and I don't go out of my way to attack mobs. The one thing I HAVE done is complete all side-quests I came across.

I'm on par with the class quest level requirements now.
By unsilviu (SI Core) on Jan 12, 2012
unsilviu
Huh. I was in the server stress test beta, and the first couple of Jedi quests bored me to hell. Star Wars game, and you start whacking aliens with a fake lightsaber for nary a reason. Maybe when it gets cheaper, or F2P, I'll try it out as well.
By SirRoderick (SI Elite) on Jan 12, 2012
SirRoderick
It's not a fake lightsaber, it's a training saber :duh:

The first inquisitor quests are basically trials, provided by a Sith that hates your guts. I was kept interested in the developments.
By unsilviu (SI Core) on Jan 12, 2012
unsilviu
But since when do you send recruits into hostile territory with training equipment?? I greatly preferred KotOR's style of giving you an ordinary vibroblade, instead of a lightsaber. And since you're actually playing the game, I must ask: How much of KotOR's atmosphere is kept? Am I right in thinking it's a lot more lighthearted?
By SirRoderick (SI Elite) on Jan 12, 2012
SirRoderick
....ehm, Sith? hello?

You're not in the order anymore.

On the atmosphere, that's a difficult question since 1) Kotor was very different fro Kotor 2, B) I'm playing a Sith, which never really happened in kotor (excluding the ending bit) and Lizard) I'm just level 12 by now, lots of plot to come.

There will be grinding in "TOR" have no fear. I thought the same of "STO" when playing Episodes to reach the rank of Captain, but the "Daily" missions, ones you can repeat daily, obviously, are the ones that earn you more in-game cash. It's a chore many perform as part of the daily routine of playing, and once completed you can get on with other tasks. Housekeeping, of sorts.
I just tried to launch "STO" this morning, and the launcher now has Perfect Worlds emblazoned on it and the site is currently down after loading a 400MB patch. Getting ready for next Tuesday, no doubt.

Guys who are going to play "STO" F2P, I'll be forming a Fleet just for SI members and any friends that might want in. I've stocked my Bank with some conolses, weapons and crafting items to help members get ahead without paying in EC's (I also have access to items in two other Fleet Banks). I was thinking of a name like "The First Sea Lords", but would be happy to hear a few suggestions. Will still post this on the Community Page, but it appears members don't often go there.

I meant grinding the same opponent again and again until you finally beat them and then take an arrow to your knee and have to restart...(Sorry SirRoderick but I had to ;))
Sure - grinding might not be the best of terms since it has been totally owned byt MMO TM's by now ;)

I'll add the fuel.
I just watched Yahtzee's top 5 Worst and Best of 2011, and he mentioned "Dark Souls". While not making either list he did allure to the game "...giving blowjobs to high school students..." or something like that. You'll have to watch it yourself, as I won't bother again. "Portal 2" took out 1st in the Best category, while "MW3" and "BF3" shared 1st place in Worst.
"Skyrim" got 5th place in Best....

He is funny in the beginning, then annoying, then you realize he is not a good gamer neither is he consistant with his words.... Racking down on things is easy and he us good at that, but listening on what he actually thinks about games and you will be the one going wtf?
The arrow meme was only to Roderick that time cause I read his adversion to it ;) I will try to refrain from it. :)
By SirRoderick (SI Elite) on Jan 14, 2012

I just realised that killing the meme with fire will only result in a flaming arrow to the knee. Dammit.
