Sony Online Entertainment's EverQuest 2 has seen a bumper crop of new users thanks to going free-to-play recently, and has had a "200 percent increase in item sales," says John Smedley.

There's been a 300 percent increase in new players with 40 percent more daily logins, noting it took place while "some really good competition hit the market."

"We are seeing some amazing growth in EQ2," twittered SOE big cheese John Smedley. EverQuest 2 spluttered to life back in November 2004 alongside Blizzard's World of Warcraft.

"40 per cent increase in daily logins since going F2P. 300 per cent increase in new players," he continued. "And 200 per cent increase in item sales. Plus we have added a lot of new subs." A new EverQuest game is in development and likely for PlayStation 3 as well as PC - it's codenamed EverQuest Next.

Sony Online cancelled their PS3 and PC MMO The Agency last year, which would have let us join either a global spy agency or mercenary outfit. It was a tongue-in-cheek affair but they got cold feet.

Did you still play EverQuest 2, video gamer?

Tempted....but no. Never really was an "Everquest" fan.
However, jolly good for Sony Online and keep "DCUO" going!
