BioWare working on "Gray Jedi" playstyle goodies, a "future piece of content"

If the light or dark side doesn't really suit your Star Wars adventuring with The Old Republic, but you really want some powerful loot, then BioWare's upcoming plans should pique interest.

They're planning some future content that will be looking to reward those who prefer to walk the 'gray line' in morality. Right now some of the best items are only for nice or nasty heroes.

BioWare knew there "would be an urge, especially for min maxers" to go either completely light or dark side as history showed so with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

The problem is some people prefer to walk a tightrope - they don't want to be a complete jerk as a Sith, or would prefer their Bounty Hunter only chase credits with an occasional flare for compassion. At the moment powerful items are locked to either light or dark side ranks with more neutral adventurers left out.

"We knew with the light side/dark side system that there would be an urge, especially for min maxers, to go completely light side or dark side. It happened in Knights of the Old Republic back in 2003. We knew it was going to happen," game director James Ohlen told PC Gamer.

"We have a system for people who want to stay more in the middle. But that’s something coming up in a later release,” he continued. They want to avoid players getting shunned for not being completely light or dark in the end game.

“It’ll let you play a “Gray Jedi”. Basically you don’t need to go to the extreme to get rewarded. You can have a different playstyle. We like to call it the “Gray Jedi” playstyle. That’s coming in a future piece of content.”

"We don’t want to force people. We were careful about the rewards for Light Side and Dark Side as well. We don’t want to make them too impactful on the endgame because it would mean players wouldn’t be allowed to join an Operation unless they were absolutely Light Side and or Dark Side. However, once we get to the next stage of our light side/dark side system, you’ll see the rewards. Light Side, Dark Side and the grey items will all get more powerful.”

Are you inclined to have your RPG characters go to a moral extreme, video gamer?

If and when I finally get this game, I would definitley be interested in going down the "Grey-Jedi" path.

This is really good to hear. When i play evil i usually find it difficult to go all the way so an actual choice would be nice.

How about a tanned Jedi/Sith? You know, as In Aussie? Where is the bloody game, EA????

Wow, and I would like to include skimpy clad Dark Elves from Lineage 2 too because the would be über too!
Sorry, but the toy mongler Lucas is strict - there is no try! White or dark as my coffee is the only way to go when you're dealing with the force. (Mideclorians) But neutral loot for none-force users could be nice - but if this is like KOTOR everyone will probably be stuck by the evil/good thermometer....

Well Annakin was grey for the whole of the Clone Wars, until he finally turned of course. never quite all white, never really over-stepping the mark. Could have gone either way, but you''re right that in Lucas's hands there was only ever one result.
What a shame it had to be Lucas that created "SW". I tried to read his novel of "SW" again the other day, and it's still as hard to read and as confusingly dull as "Mein Kampf".

I'm not quite sure which side you're trying to insult with that comparison :)

Neither.....or both. Never can tell:)

Actually, FoolWolf, gray Jedi are quite central to KotOR II :P Your mentor there, Kreia or something pretended to be grey until she turned out to be a Sith (I hope no one's offended at me posting 7 year-old spoilers). And if I remember correctly, the Exile could pick a "story" gray-path.

If they pull off some good "Grey-Jedi" DLC I might actually give TOR a go. I've never been that keen on playing 'one or the other'. Also, unsilviu, yes, you could play a grey-path in KotOR II, but ultimately the story depended on you committing to a light/darkside ending...

That's because the ending was rushed by LucasArts, there were 2-3 restoration projects which took the sound files and art not available ingame and "reactivated" some features. I don't know whether the grey path was one of those things.

Bah, only weaklings would appreciate this content. True power comes only from the dark side!

Users beware, side effects might include an increased likelihood of falling into conveniently placed reactor shafts.

....also you might be forced to replace certain body parts...they sort of...rot. :|

It is the price you pay for supreme power.

Thirty-nine accounts were up for free download on Bittorrent overnight (yes I watch for these things, but will never be drawn in). All you had to do was download and try one of them then change the password. Crazy if anyone tried it (and I bet they did) as EA will lash out violently. Controversy enters the Republic already.

Already with the hacking :(.

If the accounts were made public like that i'm sure the original owners will at least have an easy case of prooving they got hacked.

Phishing emails having been going around ever since launch and frankly I'd be very surprised if they didn't try and hack this. Every MMO has problems with it and this one is very high-profile.

Just don't hand ANYONE your password.

I'm still getting loads of phishing scams supposedly from Blizzard and my "WoW" account (I briefly trialed the MMO, and not liking it uninstalled never to return). "Delete" is the best function on email.

That is why I use a spam email account for anything that isn't directly controlled by the "big guys". I never get any spam on my actual email account, the other one currently has over two thousand messages I can't be bothered to erase :D

Oh they're all placed safely in the "junk" folder automatically, but I must check it manually as some legit newsletters/ email responses that hotmail refuses to recognise are there. Interesting also to see the headers as I delete them:)

unsilviu, I never finished neither KOTOR nor KOTOR2, the games were to me the start of Bioware's descent into the more cineastic - less gaming world. I li,ed the idea and world, but never much cared for the game and the fighting was really boring and repetetive after a few levels... IMO

The closest to Gray Jedi would be Kyle Katarn imo, and he is more of an anti hero than gray jedi at that...

Kyle? NAh he's pretty damn close to full on Jedi. He just went bad for a little bit.

A grey Jedi = Revan.

The man was the ultimate mix between light and dark side, Jedi and Sith. Most interesting character in SW by a mile for me. I've been meaning to get the novel.

Having fun with "The Republic" mod for "SW: Empire at War" as well as the "SoaSE" mod "Sins of a Glactic Empire".
Oh well, best I can do until March....

I've heard the space combat is "meh". True?
I know "SWoTR" is all about ground action, probably why I've never played it as the space battles were my interest in "Star Wars". The ground battles, aside from Hoth (that had Airspeeders) generally lost my interest unless AT-AT's were involved. Probably why I enjoyed the critically damned "Force Commander".
Landspeeder? Give me a Jedi Fighter.

Space combat...well if you're expecting a fully developed area of the game then it would be dissapointing. They are on-rails shoot em up missions with some nice XP rewards. I quite like them as a little diversion from time to time.

I have no idea why you'd have that attitude to the ground action. That's where all the Jedi/Sith are fighting, which I've always felt is the the most attractive part in SW. Also looking forward to playing an Agent. People are saying it has quite a level of "James Bond" going on. Except he's on the wrong side of course :D

No, I never was interested in the Jedi/Sith shenanigans....all too magic and sorcery for me.
It was always about The Empire vs. The Alliance when the film first came out, and the Vader/Kenobi thing was just an interesting, if unbelievable side story. If you watch the movie, you'll see Vader really is treated as an antiquated relic by the Admirals and Generals of the Imperial Fleet except for Tarkin who generally keeps him as a pet. Even the Obi-wan saga is only lightly touched on, more as an historical reference. Stormtroopers, X-Wings and the Millenium Falcon was where all the interest was initially directed.... until the fans' responses. It surprised Lucas and only then was the Jedi/Sith storeyline developed. Lucas hated directing movies, so dropped out except as a Consultant and EP. Then we had "SW" meets "The Muppetts" (Yoda, in other words) and the whole Saga really kicked off.

As an aside, it was the duel between Ben and Vader that got me into the sport of Fencing, and I used many of Vader's quirks while fighting to throw off my opponents (tilting the head inquisitively at just the right moment).

LOL, yeah and then green, red, blue and yellow light rods were cheap and Lucas needed some new cool Twi-Lek scantily clad babes dual wielding sabers to make up for another ranch - solution - riddle the world with Jedi's of different classes too.... ;)
