Rumor: Next Microsoft console will have Blu-Ray, DVR, anti-rental tech
Posted: 25.01.2012 20:37 by Comments: 28
According to Kotaku, an industry source claims that the next Microsoft console will come with Kinect 2, feature a Blu-Ray player, along with an anti-used game tech and possibly a DVR.

However, there are several obstacles to parts of the rumor.

Putting an anti-used game tech in the console would also be problematic. Aside from such a tech being difficult to implement, Microsoft would face resistance from not only gamers, but from videogame retailers such as GameStop, who might refuse to advertise or fully stock a console that would ruin a major portion of their profits.

As for the Kinect 2, a representative from Microsoft told Kotaku, "As an innovator we're always thinking about what is next and how we can push the boundaries of technology like we did with Kinect. We believe the key to extending the lifespan of a console is not just about the console hardware, but about the games and entertainment experiences being delivered to consumers. Beyond that we don't comment on rumors or speculation."

This rumor follows yesterday's leak that the Xbox 720's SoC (system on a chip) was being manufactured.

An "anti-used" feature will not go down well with the Video Rental Industry, nor with retailers and online stores such as GameFly, as you've pointed aout Jonah. Would be highly unpopular and might find Microsoft in the Courts faster than the 720 can be even previewed.

The Blu-Ray is also impossible. Why in the world would Microsoft

1. use a CLV for games? Constant linear velocity is awful for games
2. pay Sony licensing?

They went through this before with Blu-Ray add-ons. Ain't. Gonna. Happen.

No doubt it is just a mischievous rumour released to stir up the angst of gamers and retailers. Almost like a hacker, really.

Well, this sounds like an anti-sell product to me ;)
If they go on-line only - why should you need an Xbox when you can use the laptop and go On-Live instead ;)
No, I think the consoles need to keep the families happy for awhile longer and make sure they can rent some expansive games while they rent some movies for the weekend...

I can see Microsoft releasing something similar (and compatible with?) the Blu-ray, such as a High-Capacity DVD, but that's all. As for the anti-rental system, I highly doubt that is going to happen...

I think Win8 allowing players to play Xbox 360 games on their PC with a Live Gold account is more likely.

@mastorofpuppetz
Firstly welcome.
Secondly, that's not a good way to make friends here. Personal attacks/abuse on staff and/or members is not tolerated - that will get you moderated and disliked equally.
Your post is offensive, period!

On to the subject of Blu-ray and Sony which seems to have ruffled your feathers.
No, Sony does not own Blu-ray BUT JonahFalcon never said it did (that's YOUR assumption).
It does, however own the Logo and Sony Pictures alone represents more than HALF the films EVER made with MGM and Sony Pictures. So they dop have a large stake in it, along with many other "partners".

Your second post, however is utter nonsense. Save it for the Steam Forums where this kind of gutter-trash posting is popular.

Blu-Ray is proven NOT good for games. CLV is Constant Linear Velocity, which means it's fine for movies and music, it's NOT good for random access.

"While Sony's rival PlayStation 3 enjoys a Blu-ray drive capable of holding up to 50GB on each disc - although suffering from a painfully slow access time that requires developers to store common assets in multiple locations on the disc"

Ever wonder why many PS3 games have mandatory HD installs? That's why.

Don't know why we even bother with explaining anything to Trolls. Perhaps we are more polite here than other sites:)

Weird. Never seen that many trolls here. Only spammers :). Well the news about the new console doesn't affect me anyways. I'm forever a PC gamer. Anti-rental tech? Now we will have pirated consoles too!

Or you could buy Windows 8 and play XBox games on your PC - gag!

Is that a feature of Windows 8 Herod??

@hunter: we're in the public domain so trolls also have access to the site eh. But we'll of course do our best to counter them.

@Roderick: You mean some sort of reporting tool for such posts?
By herodotus (SI Herodotus) on Jan 30, 2012

It's a good idea, Kres. No need for PM's to report such violations.
On Windows 8, it was rumoured that you could play XBox 360 titles on the OS, but this would disadvantage many if going up against the more precise M+K combo in some games.
Major Nelson, the longtime face of Xbox Live confirmed in a blog post last November that Windows 8 will be getting Xbox Live functionality. There is also widespread talk of Kinect functionality in Windows 8, and there's already a Kinect SDK for Windows. There will also be Apps, so if you wish to turn your PC into a Tablet Windowes 8 is the way to go.

I would agree that a little reporting "flag" button would be handy. Just click on the button, enter reason and send, makes things easier.

Yes, if you want to use your PC for software designed for inferiour platforms, win8 will be your chance :P
I still think offering xbox GAMES on windows might be a questionable move. What's the point of the xbox at that point? I mean you could just link up a PC to a tv screen if you want to lounge game. And PC games and function would also be available.

So there IS a consensus that M&K combo beat joypads? Good. There were some people here and there that claimed they would beat _anybody_ with a keyboard, while themselves would play on joypad. So I wasn't always absolutely certain that K&M is the best. Though there was a gut feeling that it is. So we may be able to test that, good.

I don't think we get that many poor posts from people to justify adding some flag into the layout with each post to report it. Kind of complicates the view. Though eventually it might be necessary. When we grow bigger then GameSpot.

I remember a shooter, can't remember which one, a few years back that experimented with allowing cross-platform multiplayer. They were forced to break it off because the console gamers were being consistently humiliated by the PC crowd. Obviously. Anyone who claims he is as good with a controller as with a a mouse and keyboard is either really bloody bad at using a mouse or lying.

M+K rules the roost, end of.
Report Flags might be a consideration for the new SI Forums. I think they might just be needed there.

Yeah I believe that has to be true.

Yes it would be a must for the forums I guess. Spams, trolling, hating... Though we're currently working on a major rehaul of our videos section. Should be done in a week or two. Or even three. Never sure about these dev things. Whenever I give a date it ends up badly. And I just did that again. But it's totally being worked on on daily basis. New host, new video player, new video player page. Forums are scheduled _somewhere_ after that. Always a load of things on to-do list. That is good.

@SirRoderick - I believe that Shadowrun the poor FPS version of it (as that would be something new) showed that consoles without auto-aim didn't stand much of a chance with the PC crowd. With auto-aim most still had a rather dismal experience of being owned. The FPS genre where reflex is king is owned by the currant PC setup...
Not adding any other value here since I have tried FPS on consoles and quite frankly had a dismal experience of being owned...

Always M&K, any genre! But I'm biased because I'm terrible with joypads.

Here, here though it did used to dominate my son and nephew years ago on the PS1 and N64. Ahh, those were the days of young reflexes. "Mk4" and "Goldeneye"....such fun.
