The original EverQuest, arguably the most influential MMO of all-time, will finally be going free-to-play. The announcement came in a public letter by producer Thom Terrazas. The venerable MMO more or less set the template for most modern MMOs, including World of Warcraft. The MMO will go free to play on the 16th March.
According to the by Terrazas, when the MMO goes free-to-play, "We will be having some extra added events in the game starting that week leading up to that Friday and we're introducing some new items within POK to let you know what's in store." The official site, www.everquest.com will also be revamped.
"We have improved the functionality of our Map system! Some improvements include being able to view appropriate level content for your character on the map, allowing you to find zone lines much easier; and also showing you your wisps on the map to help navigate to where you want to go!", added Terrazas.
Players will also be receiving a Welcome Pack on the free-to-play launch, which will include the ability to summon a unique Mercenary to fight by the player's side, as well as some Bayle Marks to help pay for the services of the Mercenary. Also included in the Pack are a couple of Experience Potions and a trophy item to display in the gamer's home. Finally, players will be able to customize the appearance of one of their weapons with a Weapon Ornamentation.
The actual details of the upcoming payment scheme have been revealed at the official site .
EverQuest launched in 1999, and at its peak enjoyed 700,000 subscribers. While those numbers have obviously dwindled - especially after the launch of EverQuest II - the MMO still enjoys a loyal fan base as well as one of the richest in-game histories of any MMO, rivaling even World of Warcraft.
