Pitchford: Aliens: Colonial Marines will favor realistic grittiness over action

Gearbox head Randy Pitchford has revealed in an interview with PlayStation US Blog that the upcoming science fiction shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines will focus on realism and grittiness than arcade action.

When asked by the blog on if the game would favor "grittier and more realistic" gameplay, Pitchford replied, "I would say that the player’s experience for Aliens: Colonial Marines will tend closer to the gritty realism side."

Pitchford added, "I say that because sometimes the gameplay footage we use for marketing will tend to focus more on the action — which is definitely in there — but you can’t really feel difficulty and challenge as well when you’re trying to promote and market the game using promotional footage."

The subject of multiplayer was also broached, and Pitchford stated that it would be an important part of the game, saying, "Multiplayer is a big deal for us. It’s getting a huge amount of attention."

He also hinted that they were ready to unveil it to the press, confiding "I think we’ll be looking for some opportunities very soon to get some people outside of our studios, including some journalists, to have a chance to preview the multiplayer game and play a bit of it. We’re really looking forward to testing it against other eyes and getting some feedback from that, so it shouldn’t be too long before we make that happen."

Aliens: Colonial Marines, after some long delays, is targeted for a Fall 2012 release on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Very good to hear. But then they said loads about "BiA: Hell's Highway", a failed game that i won't aloow them to ever forget. So much promise, flash and hype - such a dismal game.

Well the videos so far showed the exact opposite, so why do they continue to let marketing screw this up?

Because the action sells to the widest demographic.

Yes but if they continue to do that the target audience won't care about the game enough to buy it, and the people that buy the game for the action are going to think the game sucked, word of mouth matters quite a lot.

The game doesn't lack for action. When people play an Aliens game, they expect horror anyway.

It difficult for a game to do both at the same time though.
If it's an action game then it can't really be a horror game, when you're killing the aliens like puppies i simply can't see the horror part.

Action and horror are in direct opposition, unless the balance is just right a game simply can't honestly claim to be both.

You can easily have a gore action game but a horror action game is much more difficult to do.

"FEAR" combined action, horror and a "gritty" feel so we know it can be done. It depends on what Rebellion are striving for. A good shooter based on "Aliens" that draws in crowds of console gamers that are hungry to eat up the next FPS/TPS any one will do? Or will they focus on making a truly stand-out game based on the action side of the franchise that seamlessly combines horror with action (as "FEAR" did, but it's sequels did not)?
A game with the atmosphere of that old PC title "The Thing" combined with the frenetic pace that comes with fighting swarms of Aliens as Colonial Marines would be great.
