Activision and Hasbro have announced a new adaptation of the classic board game Battleship that will be developed by Double Helix Games, which developed such games as Silent Hill Homecoming, Front Mission Evolved, and most recently, Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters.

Battleship will also be based on the live action motion picture being produced by Universal Studios this Summer, which, too, is based on the board game.

The game will be a strange mix of genres, as both a strategic naval command game as well as first person shooter, as Battleship will have two separate phases of gameplay.

Battleship puts players in the role of elite demolitions specialist Cole Mathis, who is being attacked by aliens from outer space in a Hawaiian setting. Mathis is trapped in a communications dead zone, and must command the U.S. Navy fleet while also rallying the troops on land. Players go from a "Battle Command" map much like the Hasbro game as Mathis gives strategic orders to ships, while going to a first person shooter mode when attacking ground troops on shore.

Battleship will be released on a wide variety of platforms including the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game will be released in April in Europe and May in North America.

Console only, hey? I'll stick with the film then, hoping t won't turn out to be as shockingly bad as "World Invasion: Battle L.A.".

"The game will be a strange mix of genres, as both a strategic naval command game as well as first person shooter" Sounds interesting, might keep my eye on this.
