It's done! Brian Fargo's inXile Entertainment can begin work on Wasteland 2 once the Kickstarter project comes to a close as it's raised the needed $900k to begin work in just 2 days.

As of now it's hovering at $975,463 from 16,933 backers. It launched March 13th to get community backing for a direct sequel to 1988's Wasteland. It's a "dream" declares Fargo.

There'll be no submitting to the might of a publisher with Wasteland 2, as the studio can make it how they want. "I haven't been more excited to make a game in over a decade."

"It is a dream to focus all my attention on making a wonderful experience without distraction from outside forces," said game design veteran Brian Fargo. Initially he was fishing for community reaction simply to the idea of starting up a Kickstarter project for Wasteland 2. He's got his answer by way of $900,000 pledged in under 48 hours.

Check out the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter page for more information. 32 days remain. "We will not let you down!"

So how does this work, do people that donate money get a proportional discount when the game is launched or is it all based purely on basically anonymous donations?

They have tiers set up according to how much you donate. 1st tier on this one was 15$ which rewards you with a DRM free digital release of the game. In all there are about 8 to 10 different reward levels varying from 10$ to 10k$. The strip on the right hand side on the Wasteland 2 kickstarter page explains it all.

Sounds like 15$ cold be worth it. I will have to look into this.

So you basically pledge 15$ and get the game when it's done, this is actually a very good deal.

This kickstarter project is a good idea, hat down to the guys behind it.
