Rumor: Bethesda to unveil The Elder Scrolls MMO in May

Tom's Guide reports that an industry source has leaked to the site that Bethesda will be revealing a new MMO based on the Elder Scrolls IP. The MMO would allegedly take place 1,000 years before the events of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, in what fans of the series know as the Second Era.

A rumor regarding an MMO set in the Elder Scrolls universe has been floating around for the last two years, with Bethesda's director Todd Howard claiming he had "no interest" in such an MMO, stating, "You know, it's what most of us are into. I'm not really an MMO guy. I respect them, I look at them, but I don't play them."

According to the leak, the MMO would feature three playable factions. None of them have been named, but their standards are known: a dragon, which likely refers to the Septim royal line, which is Dragonborn, a lion and a winged figure that is either a phoenix or an eagle.

The timing of an announcement in May would certainly generate some buzz heading into E3 2012, which takes place during the first week in June.

Predictably, both Bethesda and ZeniMax refuse to comment on the rumor.

I still have to get into this game. I have played it, and have not gotten far. I am just not getting sucked into the game.

Gimme a break...I'm only 50 hours in to "TOR". Now another big draw card on the horizon, and whispers of a "Mass Effect" MMO taunt as well. *sigh*!

They need to work a lot of changing the gameplay if they should go MMO because today the followers and the joint missions are a hell to play since the AI seems to be a suicidal hooligan with a temper to match.
Also, one of the really nice things with the TES games is that YOU can run off into the wilds and do whatever you want.

Tried that on tatooine but started dying of thirst. Only obstacle I've come across so far.

I bet it's the same thing as in WoW, where you have fatigue if you go too far out into the ocean, and there's an invisible wall just ouside of your reach.

I don't think i'm interested in a TES MMO.
The whole point of these great singleplayer games is that they're all about you, MMO's simply don't have that.

There's an epic struggle where you barely manage to kill a tough boss, defeating that boss is very important because of the "important reason". 10 seconds later he respawns right in front of you and pretends nothing ever happened.

So what was the point of defeating him if it doesn't change anything? For me MMO's simply don't have the immersion factor of SP games and in an RPG this is quite important.

On the other hand, I would love to see a first person RPG which was as much about exploring a huge wondrous land with a friend as it was about killing monsters.

You know, a real adventure.

That was pretty much what WoW was to me, back in the early days. I remember stocking up on beef jerky to cross the Barrens, a real journey through a strange land, filled with high-level mobs that could one-shot us. But when you reach max level, you start thinking analytically, how to milk the game's system for maximum killing power. It's why WoW is getting stale, I think, most players have sucked all enjoyment out of it and made it into a game of stats.

If there's a license I'd love to see an MMO based on, it's TES. It has a rich backstory, plenty of material, a huge, well-known landscape, etc.

While the world of ES is one of my favourites and I'd love the MMO to work out, it's technicalities and gameplay mechanics that matter. For instance Warhammer and W40K both have great worlds developed for over 20 years in countless productions, but their MMOs died out quickly. In the long run even the best story needs to be "told with right words".

When did Warhammer Online die out, and when was W40K Online released?

"Warhammer 40K: Dark Millenium"...mmmmm. That one had slipped my mind, but is back on the radar. I know it's not the same, but "Myst V" is out for aventurers. My only problem with FP in RPG is that you don't get to see what you like most of the time. That being said, as you take damage I'd like to see that reflected in my look not just my health bar. MMOFPSRPG - I like it for the combat.
