Gaijin Entertainment has announced that the closed beta for their massively multiplayer air combat sim War Thunder: World of Planes has started.

According to Gaijin, "The multi-staged beta test will allow tens of thousands of players to become better acquainted with the War Thunder universe, giving fans of the project a chance to contribute to the game’s development. Closed beta test servers will be open 24 hours a day, meaning that players who have been invited can join the game at any time. To start, participants will have access to more than 100 aircraft models and several different locations, with new content added continuously throughout the test period."

The developer also released a trailer commemorating the launch of the beta. Check it out in the video below.

World of Planes has been in development a lot longer than World of Warplanes.

So the other way around then, my bad.

HENSCHEL Hs129 B-2 "Panzerknacker" picture from the main page of the news item ad my mouth watering. Always wanted to virtually fly one of those beats for years. Especially with long 30 mm MK 101 AP cannon in a centerline pod.
Still, I think I've had my fill of Gaijin after what for me was a disppointing "Wings of Prey". Objective driven missions (sometimes a grind and difficult to complete satisfactorily) unlocking the next mission. Too "HAWX" for me.

Cool - tell me all about it.

"Week ago"...xD

From what I've gathered it looks to be more focused on realism than WoWP. There is mission based gameplay, some sort of PvE campaign, actual singleplayer content.

Tell you what, this is their features page:

Ahhh, sorry. Was in a hurry in missed that you'd only signed up for the beta. With the massive upgrades coming to "Rise of Flight" (English Channel Map with seaborne scouts and two-seaters) I find it hard to be drawn back to the over-played world of WW II. Even "Cliffs of Dover" failed to grab me, as it HAS failed on oh so many levels. "DCS A-10C Warthog" is the only air sim I "fly", and that IS realism.
I don't like Gaijin's mission-based SP so we'll see. Dynamic Campaigns are the only way to go.
