Sony's Hirai wants to "exceed the PS2 numbers" after nine years

Kaz Hirai of the Sony giant wants the sales target for the PS3 to hit around the 150 million mark as they plan to best their own last generation.

He said it isn't a great ride for him to see the PS3 "replicating the PS2 numbers." Recently the original PlayStation console, which launched in 1994, hit 102 million sales.

"It's not fun for me replicating the PS2 numbers. I've seen that movie already," said Hirai, talking with FT.com.

"I want to try to see if we can exceed the PS2 numbers after nine years, otherwise why are we in this business?"

It has taken nine years for the PlayStation 2 to reach 140 million units sold and with the slow start to the PS3's launch it could well prove a tight race indeed.

Can the new tricks of the PS3 best the old faithful PS2 in nine years?

avatar Won't happen. The release was a 'Sales Failure' as the numbers sold were very low. The PS3 has a long way to go before it becomes a gaming console first, and an AV device second.
