Some analysts have stated that Sony needs to drop the price of the PlayStation 3 by $50, and US retailer GameStop has currently done so itself, lowering the price to $199.99.

Meanwhile, Jesse Davnich of EEDAR states that the PS3 does not need a price drop.

According to Davnich, "I don't believe the PlayStation 3 needs a price drop at the moment. Sales have been consistent and in-line to what one would expect for a platform that continues to successfully grow its install base so late in a console cycle."

Davnich went on to state that the GameStop price drop is a temporary one, and is in no way a permanent price cut.

Regardless of GameStop's intent, one of the implications of the retailers price cut, temporary or not, is that the company is trying to move stock that isn't selling.

"There could be many elements at play, but I highly doubt this is any indication of weakness for the PlayStation 3," Davnich said.
