It seems that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will never see the light of day after all, as it has been announced on Facebook that GSC is finally gone, and the developers from the company have formed a new studio, Vostok Games. Vostok will be working on an similar post-apocalyptic MMO called Survarium.

Concept art for Survarium.

In the post, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Southern Comfort wrote, "It's done - GSC is gone, the team is now Vostok Games and works on an MMO called "SURVAVIUM" tbr end of 2013.

STALKER 2 - "We did not reach agreement with the rights owner regarding the use of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. brand, that’s why we made the decision to move forward as an independent studio with a new project."

A new Survivum Facebook page has popped up, and Vostok Games' official site has been launched here.

Stay tuned for more info as the situation develops.

UPDATE:
The official site for Survarium is up. According to the English translation: "Survarium is a free2play MMOFPS game set in the near future. The game focuses on a mass-scale ecological catastrophe on Earth, the reasons behind vaguely known.

Impassable woods advance onto cities from every side, maddened animals and birds attack industrial complexes, military structures, warehouses and power plants. Strange plants and mushrooms grow through concrete and steel. Scientists all over the world haplessly try to cope with the anomaly sprawling across the Earth with terrifying speed. Countries collapse, anarchy spreads throughout the world. Now force dictates who to survive.

The game is developed with a new proprietary Vostok Engine technology and is planned for release on PC at the end of 2013."

UPDATE 2: Vostok Games released a press release from their official developer site, explaining the transition from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 to Survarium.

"The concept of Survarium is a next evolution step for the idea of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. we’ve been working on for the last ten years. – said Project Lead Ruslan Didenko. – Survarium will go way further forcing mankind to fight for survival not only within the closed area of Chernobyl zone, but also far beyond."

"Technology versus nature, rational versus mystical. Such a confrontation enables us to take a new look at the current happenings in our world, - said Aleksey Sytianov, Lead Game Designer of the project. – Survarium will offer players an atmospheric world of civilization crash, filled with factions and loners, stalkers and hunters surviving in a wild anomalous environment."

While interesting...it's an MMO and that means having to do things I don't want to do. I would have looked forward to STALKER 2.

Nah. STALKER has always been a single player MMOFPS anyway. You may not like MMO's, but you were playing one without realizing it heh

Not at all, I was never doing anything that felt like a grind IMO. If they're going MMO I can guarantee you that you won't be able to just organically progress through the various areas, you're going to have to grind your equipment out at the very least.

Who says this will be? There was zero grinding in PlanetSide.

Can you think of more examples than a single 2003 game? Especially seeing that this is going F2P, they're going to want to offer incentives to buy certain things, one of the most popular ones obviously being time-savers in other MMOs. Where you either buy good equipment off the bat or things like exp/credit boosters.

I hope you're not just being optimistic there, but I'm inclined to say you are.

Can you list other MMOFPS's other than PlanetSide?

Dammit :(

Just rename the game and release it.

V.O.A.Y.E.U.R.
or
P.A.N.T.Y._T.H.I.E.F.

Problem solved.

Not another bloody MMO....

Ps. How in hell was the original an MMO, Jonah?

It wasn't at all really, Jonah sometimes has a very vivid imagination :P

I'm not the only one who thinks so.

No, I'm actually interested in why one would think it an MMO. I played it through many times over after reading every article right up to release. I struggled with the MP for many hours gaining some fun from it....but I never thought or could ever think of it as a MMO.

Yeah - this one kinda begs an explanation I believe... STALKER an MMO without being an MMO.. tricky ;)

So than, Stalker was an adventure-fps game. Problem solved. :D

I thought it was a Puzzle/RTS/Simulation hybrid. Boy, I'm really confused now. Were the multiple endings really just gateways to "EVE Online"?

I am not worried what it exactly was... all I care about, is that it is a great FPS game. Damn... I was really looking forward to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 this is such a bummer.

Well, I see now where the confusion is - I didn't like the game at all when I tried it... I guess I played it as a Larry clone.. :S

I liked STALKER. It was good. I like Eastern European/Russian games generally, as they are usually more realistic and generate moods better than the sugary Western games we usually see.
Let's wish the new studio well.

No where near as good as it was supposed to be though. Ater reading all the previews and interviews in the 18 months prior to release, the cut-down product we ended up with was disappointing in comparison. Took a couple of Major Mods (thankyou Major, that will be all) to bring it as close to it's original state as possible.

Ps. Today is the 26th Annniversary of the Chernobyl Disaster.

Yes that is correct. Interesting that it is 26-26. Tragic story behind Chernobyl.

The game was still a masterpiece if you took it for what it was instead of thinking what it could have been.

It's definitely one of the few unforgettable games I enjoyed a ton.

I wouldn't put it in my top 10 list (which currently has 26 entries :P ), but it was a good game that kept me busy for a bit. It was quite refreshing as well, something actually original.
