Cryptic sends emails to users warning of database intrusion

Crypic has sent out an email to their subscribers past and present announcing that after a "routine security checks and upgrades", the company found that "an unauthorized party" might have accessed their account information, including their password.


According to the email, "For your security, we've reset the password on your account. You can recover your password via the "forgot password" link on the official Star Trek Online or Champions Online web sites."

"If you have used your account name and password for other accounts, especially financial accounts or accounts with personal information, you should consider changing your password on other services as well," the email then warned.

Didn't get any email and I have a long standing account with "STO".
Not impressed, and will be submitting a ticket to Cryptic Support regarding this, even though they refer all account queries to Perfect World these days.

Up 'em anyway - the Ferngie Lockboxes on top of the Cardassian ones have ended my interest in the direction "STO" is going at present. At least PW sent out a questionnaire to us about what we thought of the Lockboxes. I certainly did not hold back.

After reading about what those Lockboxes are i don't see anything wrong with them. You don't really need them to enjoy the game but if you want them you have to spend some small amount of cash.

It's a lot worse in World of Tanks, you HAVE to spend cash if you want to have fun at the higher levels, or suffer hundreds of matches of hell in your POS stock tank.

Unless i missed something about those Lockboxes.

Lockboxes are STOs way on earning money with that they get players to pay up money just to get unique ships and so on which then again is a game of gamble so it can depends how much it costs those keys are also a big trade on STO so they are gaineble without paying RL money but these keys are enourmes on cost even lvl 50 players don't get that kind of cash quikly

also the drop rate of these boxes are wayy too high compared to other stuff i find myself to delete them all the time its quite irritating so i hope they get somekind of option to auto pass these carbage boxes

but yeah not a big time problem tho just irritating on its high drop rate

Yes, but there have been many players who have now had their accounts terminated by their parents (sometimes themselves) as the opening of these boxes became expensively addictive. This is what PW was counting on, and some parents have openly posted that this is tantamount to gambling for all ages (and gambling is something that is strictly regulated - here it is not).

Well from that point of view it might actually be questionable as it is gambling in a way.
