Sony recently that the next console God of War title, Ascension, will feature online multiplayer. Wedbush-Morgan analyst Michael Pachter believes this will not improve sales.
Pachter stated, "It's an interesting move, and something I think gamers will like, but it's odd to see it in a third-person game, and especially odd because it's not a shooter. I think GoW fans will love it, but am not sure it will move the needle on sales."
Other industry analysts are also doubtful of the feature's efficacy, and some are frustrated by it. Developer Sony Santa Monica admitted they haven't even figured out how it will be implemented. According to God of War game director Todd Pappy, the developer is "still figuring out" the multiplayer component, which indicates that multiplayer is not something that originated from an organic flow to the game, but rather a direct order to implement it from corporate.
This actually contradicts somewhat his earlier enthusiasm when he boasted that God of War: Ascension would provide "a fresh twist on competitive gaming with our new online multiplayer mode."
God of War: Ascension is a prequel to the main trilogy, and will be released on the PlayStation 3 in 2013.
