According to IGN, Dead Space 3 will feature drop-in co-op.

During single-player, the extra character will act as Isaac Clarke's guide. Rumours indicate the game will take place on a brand new snow planet, so a Virgil-like figure might be needed for Mr Clarke to survive.

We fully expect to see a host of new locations, enemies and weapon designs. Co-op is said to force teamwork into the game, with players aiding each other through the use of telekinesis and other abilities. If this is true, it seems there will be no revive system- once someone is dead, it's back to the last checkpoint for both of you.
