Total War finally gets user modding tool, TEd

Creative Assembly has released the first official Total War modding tool, called simply "The Editor" (or TEd by the series' fans), which is automatically installed when gamers update Total War: Shogun 2 or Fall of the Samurai on Steam.

To install TEd, players have to go to their Game library, and install the greyed out "Total War: Shogun 2 - The Editor".

TEd is a very user-friendly editor, allowing players to completely edit the terrain. The editor also has hundreds of battlefield props like trees, buildings, railway lines, and coastal batteries. The only thing players cannot do is edit the Campaign maps or the game AI.

In addition, players need not own a customized map in a multiplayer match if the host selects one.

..."The only thing players cannot do is edit the Campaign maps or the game AI"
AKA the main thing you'd want to mod.

They cant sell you expansions if there are dozens of free ones out there.

AKA They don't want you to cheat.

I'm sure that can be prevented by a simple hash check of the main files at each launch or something like that, AKA a proper mod support.

I still think it's about the ability to sell us stuff we'd otherwise get for free in various mods.
Some of the most interesting factions were locked in Shogun unless you payed extra for them. In the past all it took was a simple edit of a text file and you'd get ALL the factions in the game, including the minor ones. It really added life to the game, now you finish a few games with the main factions and it's over :(

There are already plenty of mods out there. But yeah didn't really see a new campaign map anywhere. I'm sure they're more worried about the money part of it, rather then cheat. Though I'm not sure what you exactly mean with cheating? But money always wins :p

They don't want you to screw around with the stuff they took great pains to carefully balance.

And you don't see how editing the campaign and Ai could allow someone to cheat?

If they implement proper mod support then it would be impossible to cheat because of those mods.

If World of Tanks guys can support mods in their highly competitive game then a bigger studio should be able to as well. Although admittedly mods in WoT are pretty minor but the concept is what it matters.

Well aren't there cheat codes or trainers anyway? Why would they care if somebody cheats? I never really use cheats so dunno.

Jonah appears to be missing the point of modding entirely...and what the hell does it matter if people cheat the singleplayer?

In my experinece few ever actually play thse maps (unless they are nomiated by the Devs and included as official maps as in "CoH" and "WiC"). The fun comes in making them.
Modding the AI - imperative for this game, particularly when you have such large Mods seen in other TW titles such as "The Third Age", "Blue Vs. Grey" and "Brother Against Brother".
