Id's Rage will be visually worse on Xbox360, storage limits to blame

In a blow to Xbox360 gamers, id's upcoming open world shooter Rage will be worse off in the eye candy department because of the two disc compression.

John Carmack revealed that getting a third disc wasn't a feasible solution with the high costs of royalty fees. He noted the consoles power wasn't the issue, just the storage.

The game will be using one Blu-ray disc for PlayStation 3 and is likely to come in both DVD and Blu-ray form for PC gamers. Carmack added that they aren't looking for digital distribution for their major titles or at least for the time being, during QuakeCon.

He also touched upon hardware issues that face the industry and believes that the shear competitive nature between the major console will inevitably shorten the lifespan of the current generation machines.

"I think it's going to be far too tempting to one-up your competitor because they don't think you're doing this but you really are to get it out earlier and try and get some first-mover advantage," he said, referring to the next 'next-gen' wave. "So I don't think it's going to be too long."

He casted doubt that the PC would ever become the dominant platform once again, knocking out the major console houses.

"There are people that honestly believe the PC will come back and make consoles obsolete. I think that probably is a naive view. I think there are inherent challenges for the PC platform that consoles don't have that I would be surprised to see that desktop PC box making Sony and 360 and Wiis and everything obsolete. I don't think that's going to happen," he concluded.

Rage is being developed for Xbox360, PS3 and PC with no announced release.

PC\'s won\'t ever make consoles obsolete I agree, but it will always remain the premier platform for serious gamers. Consoles are for fun, plain and simple (and simplified).
