Blizzard threatens permanent bans to Diablo III cheaters

Blizzard has sent out a warning to gamers - if they cheat, they'll be permanently banned from Battle.net, which will shut down their ability to play Diablo III.

The developer warns, "If a Diablo III player is found to be cheating or using hacks, bots, or modifications in any form, then as outlined in the Diablo III end user license agreement, that player can be permanently banned from the game. This means that the player will be permanently unable to log in to Battle.net to play Diablo III with his or her account."

In order to cheat, of course, players must hack their game client. "(Altering the game client) violates our policies for Battle.net and Diablo III, and it goes against the spirit of fair play that all of our games are based on. We strongly recommend that you avoid using any hacks, cheats, bots, or exploits," states Blizzard.

Of course, there are bound to be instances in which innocent players are banned; Electronic Arts has had problems with this issue, even banning players for actions they never took. It'll be interesting to see if Blizzard can succeed where so many others have failed.

It makes sense to me that if you want to cheat online, you will have to pay the price when caught. Now since it is clear that the accounts will be banned, now everyone knows not to do it.... but I am sure that some people will still do it, and some will get caught as well.

Of course I wouldn't care if they cheated in a singleplayer game, but since Blizzard is insisting that it all has to be online, yeah ban the bastards. I never felt like you can be too hard on cheaters.

Dice and EA said the same thing with "BF3" but cheaters found ways around it. Hopeully Battl.net will be more successful.
This part bothers me, though:
"...or modifications in any form...". So no Mods allowed?

Well, I still think that banning someone completely is a bit too harsh - if they only had made a Sp game - they could life ban from online play - but Nooooo we will make it all so much better with all the good and beneficial features that none can say is worse - becausethentheyaremeancheatersgoldfarmersandpiratesandhavesexwithmidgets - get over your grandeur and release an offline patch - or at least annopunce it to come in a year r two. I don't like the way the game will go when the economy will skyrocket...

Online cheaters need to get their asses kicked so i voted yes. But I also think that there should be an offline mode where players would be allowed to do whatever they'd want.

I agree with everyone saying that online cheaters should be banned, but what about the ones that are only interested in sp? Well you`re not gonna find any sp here, you know why? Because this is an mmo disguised as an sp game,as many have foretold blizzard wants this to be wow 2.

But what gets me here, as has happened elsewhere is many who use Mods, not cheating Mods mind are also listed as "cheaters" and likewise banned. This seems to be the case here as well.

Yea that part really is wrong, like when they banned people for cheating in SP of SC2.

I addition, I believe it's the right of any gamer to use Trainers and/or Cheats in a SP game without interference from the game's developer's/publishers. "C&C 3" required constant online internet connection, yet it had no problem with Trainers.
The argument that the game does not belong to the gamer I believe is a false one. The IP does not belong to the gamer, as the original copyrighted manuscript of a novel does not belong to the reader. However, once you buy that novel you can do whatever the hell you want with it - even use it for toilet paper.
Too many Game's Publishers are getting away with having their IP's and products treated as Governments treat Currency - we are allowed to have it, handle it, but de-face it in anyway and that's illegal. Ridiculous.
The Gaming Indusyry is becoming a Totalitarian Regime and it's time to fight back.

That's my Wednesday morning 5am speech done for the day...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

cheating on SP ok cheating on MP not ok DRM destroys the SP part so how can we toy around a little with some cheats for fun?(ask skidrow hint hint hint)

oh and btw hero i blieve you were referring to C&C 4

No Lich, "C&C 3", from memory required you logged in to play every time. Can't recall if you could then go offline, but I did have to log in each and every time I played it. As for "C&C 4" - I didn't bother even trying to Mod that disaster.
Cool new Avatar, btw mate. Very imposing, begging the following poster to argue with you for a slap-down:)

Your game your experience - if you want to cheat - cheat for all your worth - it is like using subtext on that Japanese movie, skip the boring parts of a Tolkien book etc. Using cheats online with others - not OK - making a sp game always on-line - is stupid.

I'm with Hero on this one.

Ouch, you actually bought cnc4? I luckily managed to avoid it thanks to the beta, things became clear after the very first match.

I read enough of C&C 4 to stay off it - and reading reviews proved that to be the right decision...

Hero, U must be mistaken, I still playing C&C3 (2007), and it does not require constant Internet connection.

Hey, I'm nearly 50 Chosen....gimme a break. I'm going on memory, and I remember having to log on the same way I did with "CoH".
As for "C&C 4", I never bought it I got it free from some guy who mistakenly sent it to me from India on Ebay. I tried to send it back but he said:Don't bother...I have plenty".

Woud have been if the game didn't suck so hard. It was like when I got "Stormrise" with a new GPU - what a waste.

@SirRoderick - Yeah, like almost half the first book for instance. I have read the trilogy more times than I would care for (they were the only books at my summer house) most likely ten times or so :S

Never read the books. Had "The Hobbit" as set reading in Year 10, and that killed any interest in that book on the spot. So, I wrote my own version and am quite happy with it. Now if I wasn't to know that Tolkien would time-jump and rip off many of my original ideas I might actually read the books. Best film adaptation I saw was by Ralph Bakshi (who also did "Wizards", one of the best animated films you'll ever see).

A moderator that actually moderates? I agree, we can't have that. Don't worry, Hero and myself will take care of everything *tries not to let out an evil cackle*

You see I have this little "delete" button right in front of me, and it is so tempting.....but no. The banhammer is a weapon best left for unpleasant guests like Spambots.

Sounds a bit talibany to me. Though they wont execute the cheaters.

It's what EA and Dice did with "BF 3" thoug Kres, actually ending up only seriously impeding honest players through rough handling. Then again, Blizzard (and EA for that matter) run roughshod over anyone who messes with their toys. bit like those Ultra Extremists you mention.

Diablo 3 is getting a bit boring . especially after having so much fun with Krater and cursing my way through Max Payne 3 SP...

Geez, that's what happened with me and "SC II". Bored after only a week. That's why these long development scehdules really have me wondering just what the Blizzard actually do with their time (and Vivendi's money), aside from the odd colour pallettte tweak and realeasing a bunch of development diaries.
