What happens when you play Civilization II for 10 years? It's not a pretty sight

A Civ fan on Reddit named Lycerius has been playing the same game of Civilization II for the past ten years. The game has reached the year 3991, and the Earth is not a pretty sight. In fact, the world is pretty much a crapsack place, tortured by the environment and nuclear war.

According to Lycerius, there are three superpowers left: the Celts, Vikings and Americans. They are locked in never-ending war, having caused the ice caps to melt 20 times due to nuclear strikes. Basically, the Earth is one big irradiated swamp.

Not that Lycerius hasn't tried to free the world of war. "Every time a cease fire is signed, the Vikings will surprise attack me or the Americans the very next turn, often with nuclear weapons. Even when the U.N forces a peace treaty," the blogger sighed.

He went on to describe, "Big cities are a thing of the distant past. Roughly 90% of the worlds population (at it's peak 2000 years ago) has died either from nuclear annihilation or famine caused by the global warming that has left absolutely zero arable land to farm."

Infrastructure? "Engineers (late game worker units) are always busy continuously building roads so that new armies can reach the front lines," Lycerius related, "Roads that are destroyed the very next turn when the enemy goes. So there isn't any time to clear swamps or clean up the nuclear fallout."

The world is run by communism and religious fanaticism now, and he can't change that either. "I wanted to stay a democracy, but the Senate would always over-rule me when I wanted to declare war before the Vikings did," Lycerius explained. "This would delay my attack and render my turn and often my plans useless. And of course the Vikings would then break the cease fire like clockwork the very next turn."

In this world, democracy is a thing of the past, and towns can't grow because all of the money is funneled into the military. He stated, "I was forced to do away with democracy roughly a thousand years ago because it was endangering my empire. But of course the people hate me now and every few years since then, there are massive guerrilla (late game barbarians) uprisings in the heart of my empire that I have to deal with which saps resources from the war effort."

Lycerius is determined to clear swamps and start farming again - somehow. "I want to rebuild the world. But I'm not sure how. If any of you old Civ 2 players have any advice, I'm listening," he begged.

If anything, this particular game is a pretty brutal object lesson. Maybe human extinction would be a kinder fate than the people suffering in this long Civ II game.

interesting ive never driven a Civ game so far myself might try that tho we(my friend and i) mostly play on the slowest speed giving time to the early ages and planning in more details i ussualy jump to a communistic -/military state where as my friend goes economical/democratic yeah were opposites but he funds my military and i help defend em so its mutual beneficial however Civ 5 destroyed that bit sinds unit stacking is off it makes a hell of a time to station troops near him without hinderence.... so we keep playing civ 4 with the next war advanced mod :)

as for this case well you have to find a reason for peace to allow a buildup you both have suffered from heavy attrition(obviously) but then again it will likely spiral down their again so you might have to be dishonoreble and plan sneak attacks during youre peace

10 years, sure, but I doubt he's been doing it every day, he's only in 3991, not 120560 after all.

turn off all victory conditions except conquest one and have the ramining 2 super powers fight simple as that tbh they can't push eachothers lines because their isn't an element to outbalance the fight its interesting but still

Or, you just win then the computer asks you if you'd like to continue, and you say "Yes!"

I was also going to point out that if the dude had NOT been playing it every day for the last 10 years, then what's the biggie. That's no claim to fame. I was married for 10 years but you don't see me plastering shots of devastation all over the cookshop:)

Hero .... Playing the same Game (not the game itself but the game in the game) for 10 Years .... is an achievement
IT lets you see how things advance...
imagine playing the same warcraft 3 game for 10 years only in a Bigger scale and in a Azeroth Format ... meaning EVERY TERRITORY is possible to get.

Respect for the Oldschool !

Still don't quite get it. Know what your saying, bone but still. What is the accomplishment, aside from doing something that would bore the tits of anyone sane?
Maybe I'm just TOO Oldschool....

For the record, this 21 year old agrees that it isn't an achievement. ^_^

It's not an achievement, but I appreciate his dedication to what he loves and is nostalgic about, perhaps in part due to the uncanny similarity his setup has to the "1984" universe. It's about how I'd imagine that place in 3991.
