Electronic Arts looking to move 5M units of Dead Space 3

Electronic Arts believes that gamers will be eagerly returning to the Necromorph-infested world of Isaac Clarke in Dead Space 3, so much so that the publisher plans to move 5M units.

One of the reasons that EA is sure it'll sell that many copies is the new co-op mode included in the game.

According to EA Games president Frank Gibeau, "What we've tried to do with each installment is tell a different story about Isaac but at the same time bring in new features and ways to turn the game into a more connected experience. For example, in the second one we added the deathmatch multiplayer, but we found from fans that they loved the single-player but when they went online they felt it really didn't capture what Dead Space was about. I think it was well executed, but it wasn't a big hit with fans."

Developer Visceral and Gibeau believe that misery, or at least terror, loves company. "It's more fun to be scared together than by yourself. So we embraced that idea and we tried to open up the accessibility of the IP a little bit by adding a little bit more action, but not undermining the horror. We can't not be a horror game because that's what Dead Space is," Gibeau promised.

He added, "So with the addition of co-op and taking it to a planet and mostly away from space... we're pushing it in areas such as environment, co-op and at the same time we definitely do not want to piss off our fans by taking it too far from horror. We're very self aware of that - we listen to the fans and we hear them."

As for the 5M unit goal, Gibeau stated, "In general we're thinking about how we make this a more broadly appealing franchise, because ultimately you need to get to audience sizes of around five million to really continue to invest in an IP like Dead Space. Anything less than that and it becomes quite difficult financially given how expensive it is to make games and market them."

He concluded, "We feel good about that growth but we have to be very paranoid about making sure we don't change the experience so much that we lose the fanbase."

Dead Space 3 is due to be released in Winter 2013 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I think the fan base of Mass effect 3 will be eager to get Dead Space 3 rather sooner than later,a sci fi fan remains a sci fi fan,not forgetting Lost Planet 3 and Star Trek The Game next year!

Talk about "more action" and being "more broadly appealing" is probably worrying, some might even shake at the idea of co-op in a horror game. I believe they have it the wrong way, it's more scary when you're alone, and I'm a fan of co-op.

But like HenoKutus says, junkies are already waiting for their fix since games like this one are rare :).

Games tend to be much scarier when playing alone, though I do love playing Co-Op. We will just have to wait and see.

Not going to fall for this one, I tried Dead Space 2 and found it to be a bit boring, "bad" controls and somewhat difficult to get into. You made some upgrades but the benefits or strengths never really was shown in an intuitive way.
The game style wasn't all that and with a story that didn't succeed in catching me - I never could muster to get more than halfway... That is still better than first Dead Space...

Facing the darkness with two will give the game a longer lifespan in a multiplayer world.
