EA may bring Battlefield Premium-style services to other games

Electronic Arts exec Frank Gibeau thanks Activision for debuting Call of Duty: Elite, states Battlefield 3's Premium service is better, and that similar services may debut on other EA licenses.

However, Gibeau claims Premium was not a response to Elite. According to him, "We've launched subscription businesses in our other categories. We had EA Sports subscription before Elite came out, so adding that component to the design is not a reaction. It's something we'd always been considering and we had been looking at."

He then backtracked, "Having said that, (Activision) did something really innovative and if your competitor does something innovative and you think it applies to what you can do, then there's no harm in doing that."

Gibeau hinted that Premium-style services could be popping up on other games. "We actually think our Premium service exceeds what Elite does - from a value standpoint, from a content standpoint, and longer term we think that we can bring more properties into that offering and that'll be great for the business," he concluded.

By 'service', so they mean that thing where they withhold content from people that payed 60 bucks for a game but refuse to pay the same amount again afterwards?

Indeed they do, Roderick. Activision cooked up a great money making scheme and EA has happily made it their own. The worst part is, gamers will buy into it and happily throw their money away on this.
Stating that "Premium" was not a response to "Elite" is if not an outright lie, then a twisted truth. "BF3" is a direct response to "MW 3" so it follows.

I can't help but admire how tenaciously they hold on to that claim. Just plain in-your-face rubbish like that takes a certain quality of courage...and evil.

Anyway, it's a money-sucking scam that's basically a tax on the stupid if you ask me. If only the money actually went to the government instead of their greedy little paws.

Unfortunately they might start putting more and more stuff into the premium service and cutting features out of the "basic" one.

...or make it seriously expensive to buy later as seperate items. The next EP "Close Quaters" will probably retail (at least here) for the same price as the "Premium" package. This will catch on quickly just as DLC's, with other Publishers sure to follow don't worry about that .

As long as consumers don't seem to realise or even care that they are being taken to the cleaners over this crap, they will keep doing, it's that simple. That's just good bussiness on their behalf, even if it's a dick move.

It's the retail consumer that allows the producer to get away with this, while in the gaming world it's worse. We (the proverbial) actually ecourage it by buying into it. If only 'we' received an EA Stock Share with each download.
