18 year old boy dies after 40 hour marathon session of Diablo III

Another gamer has passed away obsessively playing a game in a marathon session. This time, an 18-year old Chinese gamer passed away after playing 40 consecutive hours of Diablo III.

According to reports, after the boy had played Diablo III, he napped on a table in the internet cafe where he'd been playing. When an attendant roused him, he stood up, took some steps then collapsed. He died in a hospital shortly after.

This follows the death of another Chinese gamer, age 23, who died in February after playing League of Legends 23 straight hours.

Damn, that is quite insane... They should actually have some kind of limit for people to spend at the Internet Cafe, because this is not the first time I have heard of this, and normally it tends to be Asian players.

My max is ~44 hours but I had meal brakes at least once a day and plenty to drink, I think I played Z by Bitmap Brothers.

No way you can die in just 40 hours if you drink enough and it's even harder to believe a person can die just after 23 hours of gaming, the latter person must have had some other issues going on at the time.

Oh God not again. You know what, this may sound cruel and heartless but i`m not sorry for the kid, this was his fault entirely, i don`t think anyone made him do something like this.

Dead in 40 hours? When you're in death valley or the bloody artic that sort of timetable seems reasonable, but just sitting at a computer? How is that even physically possible?

He must have had an underlying condition. So playing Diablo did not kill him.

Yeah Chris is probably right. You don't just die from sitting and clicking.

Not the first time, and will not be the last. Dehydration is usually the main cause of death, though lack of sleep and malnutrion are contributors over time. For anyone who thinks this is weird or must be attributed to other causes, just google video game deaths and hospitalisations and you'll see more than a few. The human body just is not configured for 40 hours non-stop anything, as those who are carted away in ambulances from Vegas can attest to - yet.

If you don't drink anything then it makes sense, but then again people work physical jobs for that long without dying.

There has to be something else involved to make a person die like that, specially a young person.
Perhaps he played the game 20 hours a day for a month and then decided to play for two days straight or something.

People trek through tundra and float on the ocean in a raft for longer than 40 hours and they get through fine, if a little exhausted. And this kid didn't even just collapse, he straight up died. Besides the very obvious mental condition he was in, there's got to be at least an investigation in the direction of a physical condition as well.

i can't go past the 16 hours i just feel too tired and exhausted i can't imagine i even can keep up that long

also energy drinks... he must have took some during that time it can have contributed to the cause...

I have trouble going for three hours none stop. I have to take water breaks every now and then, because I get major headaches if I play too much. I have set plenty of hours on Diablo, but none of them were straight without any breaks.

never knew gaming could be so unhealthy! Some people should really have more self control and common sense.
