Indie developer Neogen2 has announced a new 4X space strategy game for PC, Star Lords, in which players lead an empire through exploring the stars, colonizing new worlds, manage their empire and conquering their enemies.

Star Lords features 8 races each with their own unique ships, technologies and playing style, tactical turn-based combat, in-depth Espionage/Intel and Diplomacy components, a complex AI that the developers promise won't cheat, and a "living universe" featuring independent races and pirate clans. Gameplay will include LAN, hot seat and online multiplayer complete with matchmaking.

The game, which is due to be released Q4 2012, seems to strongly resemble Stardock's Galactic Civilizations - check out the official site here.

This seems to be one of the better years for 4x space games :)

I'm bloody loving this! It's like a 4X revival thing going on! And I absolutely loved GalCiv, so I'm gonna put a skull probe on this one.

Oh Galactic Civilizations... countless hours well spent on those games. I have to agree, this is indeed a good year for 4x games and I only hope this continues!

I wish I could say I've had enough what with "Star Ruler", "Sins: Rebellion", "Endless Space", "Galactic Civ II - Ultimate Edition" all being played at the moment...and "Legends of Pegasus" soon to come.
But I haven't, forgive me wallet! This too looks the part, and if it lives up to expectations I'll be signing onto the shipboard roster as well.

Just can't get enough of space-based strategy titles at the moment. Land-based comes next year with "Generals 2" and "Rome 2", not to mention "Panzer Corps - Africa" soon to be released.

Pre-ordered and played for half an hour. So far the impressions are more than positive, the game is definitely a hardcore 4x game but without playing like a spreadsheet and considering it's only a early alpha it's already pretty fun to play. If I didn't have to get up early I'd probably spend quite a few hours with it.

Thanks for the feedback Mak. Always good to get early impressions from members (and yes, staffers as well).

They're all coming out of the woodwork now... I wonder what this one is going to be like? Sounds like it's trying to be SOTS2... maybe they feel like they can do a better job.

Makro - how come you've been able to play it already? They offering access to anyone who pre-orders?

Screens don't say a lot about it right now...

Yes, pre-ordering gives you access to the alpha. I'm loving it so far, I recommend it to anyone who enjoys 4x games.

What is the closest comparison available?

Hard to say really... It does have however some similarities with europa universalis, moo2 and galciv.
