DmC director accuses Western developers of doing graphics first, gameplay second

In an interview, DmC: Devil May Cry director Hideaki Itsuno thinks Western developers start with graphics and worry about gameplay second.

According to Itsuno, “Given our experience, it seems like with the west and Ninja Theory they focus on the visuals stuff at the beginning and then build the gameplay on top of that. Whereas at Capcom Japan, we focus on the game logic and getting the systems down in the beginning then we gradually build the visuals on top of that."

“I think this speaks to the differences in the core of how western games are developed compared to games in Japan,” he went on to say, adding, “We’ve been trying to find a hybrid system where we take a best of both worlds approach. It hasn’t been easy, but I think we’re happy with the results we have."

Is he right? Let us know what you think.

DmC: Devil May Cry is due to be released in January 2013 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I do't think that Japanese inspired games or asian games are that incredible with innovation and setting first. Sure, they may not go all in with the graphics, but they don't do that much to the controlls or the game itself - I mean spikey hair and oversized weapons and screaming babes and demons that are three screens wide - new thinking?

I'm sorry, FoolWolf. I'm busy watching a 40 minute cutscene in this JRPG.
