Wargaming.net CEO claims World of Tanks was dismissed as "cheap Asian stuff"

Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi made some inflammatory comments today at GDC Europe, stating that the reason his studio had to self-publish World of Tanks was that major publishers dismissed his simulator MMO as "cheap Asian stuff".

According to Kiskyi, "They were very arrogant. There were a number of things it was called. It was described as cheap, Asian stuff. And things worse than that."

"When this boxed business dies off, you know who's going to pay for your advertising?"
Kislyi then boasted. "Us."

Wargaming.net's business has been so good, the studio went from 120 workers to over 1000, which is a reverse of the current trend of layoffs in most of the industry. Kislyi says they still don't have enough employees, saying, "We are stretched, and hiring like crazy."

The 8.0 update for World of Tanks will overhaul the physics of the game. There is no release date for it yet.

"...cheap, Asian stuff"? That doesn't even make sense, but then most that comes out of the mouths of those in the gaming business (who don't really have anything to do wth games at all) is rubbish.

It's GDC. Developers tend to express their true feelings there.

Perhaps they should get a degree in Arts now they have one in IT. Might lend some intelligence to their "insights".

Well that's how we gamers tend to see things as well, so it's not surprising the they would too.
