GamesCom 2012: Bliizzard not afraid to cut Starcraft II units

Blizzard game designer David Kim states that the company is perfectly willing to axe units if they feel with the release of Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm there are too many of them combined with the original Wings of Liberty and are overcomplicating the game.

This was revealed at a GamesCom 2012 interview, in which he stated, “There’s a set number of units that should be in the game, but we just don’t know 100% what that is."

"Initially in Wings of Liberty we went with 13-14 units, which is similar to what Brood War had," he explained, "When we started exploring a bit more we tried to stick to that rule, but when you’re taking units out and putting new stuff in, there are some problems. Wings of Liberty is pretty solid in terms of each unit being useful in a certain scenario – we tried saying, well what if 15 is the right number, or 16 is the right number?”

Overcomplication was a design issue that Kim states will not be tolerated.

“After trying it out, we think it’s okay to add a couple of more units, but at the same time we don’t want it to go too out of balance, so that it becomes too complex," he noted, "That’s something we have to watch for during the beta, and really make sure that the number we have right now is good for the game.”

No unit is safe from being removed, Kim promises. It all depends on the upcoming beta testing of Heart of the Swarm.

There is no set length for the beta, either. “As long as it takes us to get the game where we want it to be,” Kim insisted.

Somehow I believe "Heart of the Swarm" will be released in 2013 or maybe even 2014...

Please don't jinx it :)

If they mean removing units, I hope it will be from the expansion. The game at the moment is working perfectly with the current units, there is not much need to change that, though I understand that is what expansions are for.

I really hope that they won't destroy Starcraft.

It's much more likely that they mean removing the original units to make room for new ones. Though I'm sure they'll listen to feedback and won't push any changes just for the sake of making changes.

C'mon, it's just another iteration of "Starcraft" the original, as "WoL" was. Burnt once, not again.

This is one game Blizzard can't ruin, because they will have the whole of North America and South Korea on their asses.

Remove them all and make new units!

I was actually quite happy with SC2, cause of the custom modded tower defense games they had in it. Those were so worth it!

I play those custom games almost exclusively, I don't care about the regular pvp at all.

Wow, Blizzard is IMO really starting to drop the ball - why not just make a MOBA out of it and be done with it? I mean if we are going to only have a few units because it is less complex - why even play it? Why not just make some generated bot-matches and let people watch them..

Exactly Nocutius. If there weren't those I'd ask for a refund ;)

Diablo III all over again (in a manner of speaking)?

Truly hope they mean cut old to add new ones...
