Following the news that shocked gamers that Command & Conquer: Generals 2 would be free-to-play, Electronic Arts has announced another bombshell: the real-time strategy game will be multiplayer-only at launch, with no overarching storyline.

According to Bioware Victory manager John Van Caneghem, Generals 2 will ship with co-op and competitive skirmishes as the core game, which additional gameplay modes being added depending on community feedback.

Van Caneghem then stated, “As a live service I think the exciting part is you can try things,” said . “You can see what the community wants, you can give it a shot, you can put it up for a weekend and see how it goes, develop towards what the fans like.” From his description, it does sound like the release will be a long post-beta test, a gamma test, if you will.

Single player campaigns might be added as a story mode later, but Van Caneghem admitted “it is something we haven’t announced yet how we’re going to do it.”

Even more telling, Van Canegham revealed that Generals 2 will be the first of a series of AAA Command & Conquer games that will focus on different times in the series' history.

“We decided to choose Generals as the first set of games we build under the universe, but we’ll be expanding after that, like Tiberium and Red Alert as well as some others as well," he hinted, "But Generals 2 was the first one, and it was one of the biggest sellers, as well as the fanbase has been asking for it for some time.”

Why? It's free-to-play. You mean you won't even try it? LOL

Ladies and gents: Jonah, seen here completely missing the point of C&C.

Translation: We'll add a campaign if you give us enough money.

Bad news, I'll still try it of course but a C&C game without a campaign is not what the players want, that's guaranteed.

This knocks the game down yet another notch :(

Well, from what I understand from the devs, they're trying to make Generals 2 an eSports game.

But they're also going with gamer feedback. The option is obvious: play it, post in the forum a thread how much you want a single player campaign.

@JonahFalcon
C&C series are all about singleplayer and story, not co-op or mp. Tiberian Twilight ruined the entire Tiberian series in one blow. EA probably figured it's Generals turn now. I'll still try Generals 2, but I highly doubt it'll be worthy of C&C name.

Yes I have Jonah, it doesn't quite seem to apply to EA killing off the best part of the original game and therefore alienating the old fans though. I don't care if the game is going to be a good F2P title in it's own right, but is NOT C&C Generals anymore.

I prefer to be excited then let down than dismissive and never try. But that's just me. :p

I prefer to be dismissive and never try and rant about it in the meanwhile and afterwards. But Jonah who cares what I think. Lets not overly argue our own opinions here. Reporting is reporting, it's not the inquisition. Chill and let people have their own opinion.

Having said that, CCG2 MP only?? Free to play to me means it's bah, dunno, lacking. But that's just me. Unless those are cool flash strategy games!

The way I see it, EA is trying to find a middle-ground between AAA and F2P games. So, there is only one solution: loads of microtransactions. And that, mates, suck.
Perhaps the big gaming houses are going down (lack of new ideas and abnudance of ruined franchises) and the new ones will arise. That could be good, in some ways. I believe a gaming renaissance is at hand.

Heard this one: "Shame on you if you fool me once, shame on me if you fool me twice..." ;)

Well Jonah's opinion is still an opinion, as long as he doesn't start banning people that disagree with him I'd much prefer to see him get involved in the debates to being quiet :)

Well, considering they've just dropped the "Generals 2" subtitle and turned this into a purely F2P game, it looks like I won't be getting this...

Agreed, I need more people with opinions that differ from mine so I can explain to them why they are wrong! It's so fulfilling :P

nocutius +1 - Jonah may have different opinions than me - but I think he shows good opinions and post them in a debate and discussion friendly manner - and I think that most posters here on SI follows that - and that is the reason I prefer to hang around here, whining or not ;)

Trouble is they've basically just cancelled the game for me. Not interested in C&C multiplayer at all, it never clicked for me. Single-player I love though.

We can either accept it or go away, not much choice here.

C&C is dead. This is an attempt to resurrect the IP. The game will still be using the Frostbite 2.0 engine, and I want to see what a C&C RTS looks like with it.

Though... C&C: Renegade 2 with Frostbite 2.0? I want that MORE.

I would not go as far as saying C&C is dead, there was only one below average game and one the sucked completely. That would obviously hurt any franchise but c&c is (one of) the first in the genre and therefore special to a lot of people, all it takes is one good game and we'll all come back happily.

Renegade was quite decent as a change of perspective, not so impressed by the SP but it was a fun MP experience but it was also a game that was mostly limited to c&c fans. I would not mind seeing a new version at all, it could actually be accepted better now than back in the day.
