Electronic Arts has announced that Command & Conquer: Generals 2 will be folded into a larger Command & Conquer free-to-play web portal. The online service will launch in 2013, with the Generals "experience" being the first of "many" free-to-play games on the portal.

Generals 2, however, will still retain its AAA production values, with graphics and sound commensurate with a Frostbite 2.0 engine title.

According to EA vice president Jon Van Caneghem, "We are thrilled about this opportunity to transform Command & Conquer into a premier online experience. For nearly two decades, this franchise has existed as something you buy; now we are creating a destination where our fans will be able to access the entire Command & Conquer universe, starting with Generals and continuing with Red Alert, Tiberium and beyond. With Frostbite 2, we are able to keep an emphasis on the AAA quality our consumers expect while staying true to the RTS gameplay they know and love - all available online for free."

So what does this mean? Basically, gamers are playing Command & Conquer, and can choose which flavors they want. For now, the only announced flavor is Generals.

Those interested in checking out just what Command & Conquer offers can register for the beta at the official site here.

I have a bad feeling that this free game is gonna cost more than ~30€ (RA3 purchase on day one).
