Developer hints at adding easy mode to Dark Souls

Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki has hinted that he would be adding an easy difficulty mode to the notoriously difficult game.

According to the developer, “I personally want my games to be described as satisfying rather than difficult. As a matter of fact, I am aiming at giving players sense of accomplishment in the use of difficulty. Having said that, however, it is true that Dark Souls is rather difficult and a number of people may hesitate to play.”

“This fact is really sad to me,” he added, “and I am thinking about whether I should prepare another difficulty that everyone can complete or carefully send all gamers the messages behind our difficult games.”

Miyazaki went on to say that it wasn't because gamers want their games to be too easy, only that he wanted to reach a wider audience.

"If the number of easy games is increasing nowadays, I guess it is because difficulty is not related to interesting and worthwhile game elements in many games among players,” Miyazaki admitted.

Don't see a reason why not, let the people choose their own experience.

Pffft, a generation of sissies, that's what we have here. The game isn't even THAT hard, just satisfyingly challenging. You die sometimes, big wooping deal!

Silly poofs

I love how hard the game is, and as frustrated as I used to get playing it, I didnt mind because they actually advertised the fact that it would be difficult, and its difficulty makes it different to most other games.

Well, the point is, you play at the level you want to play in.

I remember Catherine was made easier, and it's a good thing, too.

As far as I'm concerned, you shouldn't always have full control over the game. It works most of the time, but with a game like this which pretty much revolves around the challenges of just getting around while being wary of everything and anything...well if you were to put it on easy that basically just destroyed the game experience. It has no real epic story to tell or whatnot, it's ALL about the challenging gameplay. It's like buying a high performance sportscar and swapping the big V8 out with a 6 cylinder diesel engine from a sedan.

As a developer, I wouldn't want people to be able to do that!

So what I'm saying is, this isn't necesarily a good thing and it's up to the devs.

i get ur point roderick and normally dark souls was meant to be one of the challenging hardcore games i remember playing its predecessor Demon's Souls on the ps with a friend very hard game but really worth a run for your money

now i can feel the devs wanting to go for a wider public and adding a easier difficulty or harder with other games is a way to do so if they want more money its their call i also like a challenge i a game but i do this mostly by simply hitting the best difficulty button at start of a game...

even so on pc gaming somethimes bringing in a good AI mod might contribute for that

tbh for the pc version of this game i like to see some fixes and improvements to the controls they are very badly imported in my point of view

Don't even get me started on the goddamn lockon system :/

I'll agree that if they do anything, they should sort out the prot at least partially.

If they can - I think it is good to let people enjoy a game the way they want to. In Dragon Age 2 I so loathed the combat so I put it on easiest just to be done with the battles as quickly as possible to be able to finish the story just once and be done with the game. If I hadn't had that option - I would most likely have shelved the game...

I really liked Ninja Gaiden on Xbox - but I had too much difficulty with the bosses and the game wasn't fun - and so I didn't finish it and that kinda money actually stung a bit...
So, with limited time to add to the mix - as a parent - I'm all for more difficulties - and with the annoying achievements you get the bragging rights for finishing on hard, ultra or whatever if you like but for us that have plenty of games and a life full of responsibilities (God - I miss being 25 sometimes ;) ) being able to kick back and leisure ourselves through a game is a nice incentive to buy a game.
