BioWare co-founders retire from videogame industry, beer is involved

It's all about the beer.
BioWare co-founders and videogame icons Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka have announced that they are retiring from the videogame industry, probably for good, and for Zeschuk, his retirement includes a lot of beer.

According to Zeschuk, he's looking into producing a web show The Beer Diaries.

He stated in his blog, "After my departure I'm going to be spending significant time with family and friends, as well as pursuing some personal passion-driven projects related to craft beer."

His show will involve interviewing notable brewers and, of course, sampling their beers as he showcases them. In fact, he hopes to become a beer media magnate, noting, "If things go well, I'll work on other beer-related shows, apps and projects. If not, I'll have drunk a lot of tasty beers and may be back in games or even something else completely different."

"I'm not going to be working in games for a while, and there's a strong possibility that I won't be back," he added.

Both Zeschuk and Muzyka felt it was time to leave. While Zeschuk felt burned out, and Muzyka felt he just wanted to do something else in the field of medicine, both are leaving BioWare on amicable terms.

Muzyka wrote in his blog, "I've largely personally achieved what I wanted in videogames; I now desire to take on a brand new entrepreneurial challenge. I believe strongly in the power of free enterprise to enable sustainable change, so my next 'chapter' will likely focus on an entirely new industry, something exciting, different and frankly downright scary - investing in and mentoring new entrepreneurs, and more specifically, the field of social/impact investing."

"I'll also be spending time getting involved with more charities in education, health care, and animal rights, areas where my wife and I've typically focused our charitable donations in the past. I am also spending more time learning about the work being done to defend human rights and civil liberty across the world. Net, I am passionate about both entrepreneurship and social liberty, and I want to find a way to pursue both of them."

Zeschuk stressed Electronic Arts wasn't forcing him to leave. "Working with John Riccitiello, Frank Gibeau, Peter Moore and the rest of the EA team was a great experience and their support was essential in us being able to achieve our creative goals with Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Star Wars: The Old Republic," he said.

Let us know if you think BioWare with survive without either man at the helm.

This can't be good news for Bioware, if these guys were unable to resist EA others will have even less of a chance now. They had a sort of immunity since firing them would generate a ton of bad press but their replacements are easy to replace.

Or maybe they just wanted to drink beer for a living.

Many would agree with that :)

LOL, can't say that this is too suprising really. 5 years seems like a waiting time to be free and rich to do whatever they want. If I could, I owuld have making beer drinking a job too! ;)

Well, the best comments summarizing what I feel like have been something like this: Thank you for once making CRPG's to the classics we now know but shame on you for leaving it in the state it is today."

Thank you DR's - the oldies will always remebered and hopefully the EA days will be qyuickly forgotten...

Good luck with the beer.

After the disastrous BioWare performance, like DA2 which entirely was a totally fucked up and ME 2,3 with so much downgrade in all points compared to the first one, this is best what they could do.
"I've largely personally achieved what I wanted in videogames" You had to leave after first DA: Origins, in that way I would keep a good memory bout you.

Whaaaat? Mass Effect 2 was far far better than Mass Effect 1.

Rly? You truly believe that gathering some folks running around the galaxy, telling them that U go for "Suicide mission" and everyone of em agreed to help (yeah right, it is my personal dream to go on suicide mission), then U helping em with their personal quest (everyone! course if you want. They are such a pussies), and in the end encountering fucking Baby Reaper is somehow better?! More than that, ME2 become more shooter with covering than classic rpg (which 1st one was, remember bout how you should equip your gear in first one, and you should do the same to teammates, like in any squad based RPG's) and not to mention that in ME 2 instance there was a technology downgrade, somehow in ME1 weapons didn't needs a clips (coolant elements, riiiight).

Mass Effect Trilogy and Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 were excellent and top global sellers, too bad 2 founders are gone but they have left a big legacy wich the others will work on in their place in the future.Bioware endures!

Bioware died with Mass Effect.

The new Bioware made good games, but not great games like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights.

So two sell-out rats, who aren't even interested in gaming, leaving a ship that sunk long ago, isn't really news, just an obituary.

RIP Old Bioware.

RIP old Bioware :(

Let's at least hope for the current Bioware to not sink any further. All is not lost yet :).

I have to agree with Jonah (notes this in journal) on the point that ME 2 is by far better than ME 1. I mean really, no contest.

And yeah, these guys will be missed. It will be even easier for Bioware to get off track without their influence.

I agree Chosen_One - ME1>ME2>ME3, and the same with Dragon Age series - DA1>DA2>=

Yeah Luke, it is clearly could be seen the degradation of the series.

And ME3 is still better than ME2 on top of that. Just forget about the last 5 minutes and it's the best game I've played in a LONG while. I really don't see your problem with it :/

Well time to get out while still on top, sort of. I think the future of BioWare in EA's hands is not going to be the brightest it has been.

See the original scenario of the game.
