Cryptic calls for new MMO review system

Star Trek Online producer Dan Stahl thinks that the review process for MMOs should be different than that of traditional games, especially for Metacritic aggregates, since MMOs are constantly evolving.

In an interview, Stahl stated, “In my opinion, the whole game rating business doesn’t necessarily do a great justice to MMOs. MMOs are designed to grow over time and get better with every major release.

It might be better if sites like Metacritic could find a way to rate MMOs by releases instead of just the initial day one. There are plenty of MMOs that have made huge strides since days one and some that have even gotten worse. Until then, we will continue to offer the game for free and ask for people to try it out and decide for themselves.”

Star Trek Online transitioned to free-to-play, and will be committing to a total revamp of the MMO in the near future.

One little note about the article... STO is already free-to-play :P

But I do agree with what Cryptic has to say here. I can report from my own experiences on the MMO that it's been evolving and growing at an incredible rate. Just the sheer content added in from the last few months has been fantastic! I definitely would not rate it the 60 or so metacritic gave it if I were looking at the state of game now.

Completely agree. The structure, brought in by Perfect World that includes both of Coptic's MMOs is the best currently available restricing the "Silver" or free player to virtually nothing. "STO" is still the best free MMO structure to date, with plenty of new content always becoming available and for free. The only other that eqautes with this, aside from Cryptic's "Champions Online" is Sony's "DC Universe Online", though new content there DOES have to be paid for.

Have to agree too, MMOs do in fact change over time so day one scores are not a good representation after a while. STO really is a good example of that. Day one the game was almost bad but now it's definitely better.
