Ubisoft: Travel "not to become a chore" in Far Cry 3

Lead game designer Jamie Keen from Ubisoft says the team have spent a lot of focus making sure they don't repeat the mistakes of Far Cry 2, namely that the driving or general travel doesn't irritate.

We're promised a "fun experience" driving around with greater freedom to drive "70mph off a cliff" if we really want to. Fast travel gets us around making locations feel 'not too far away'.

In the end it's down to player choice and Ubisoft want us to 'set the pace' with how we get around Far Cry 3. The second game suffered badly from less than stellar travel.

“What we wanted to do with this one is we wanted to make driving a fun experience. We wanted it to feel like you can pull a handbrake turn round a corner and when you do it it is great and fun to do. You can just launch your vehicle at 70mph off a cliff – it might not do very well – but you can do that stuff," Ubisoft's Jamie Keen told OPM.

“We want travel not to become a chore”, he continued, “If you want to just travel across coastal roads for hours on end, by all means knock yourself out. We have fast travel points that let you move quickly around the world.”

“You never feel like anything is too far way but it’s there and its the choice that you are making, This idea of player choice is very important to us, that you are the one that’s deciding the pace and what you engage with.”

Far Cry 3 releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC November 29th in EU, December 4th in US.

That IS something they had to openly address as it was one of the biggest, if not THE biggest complaint about "FC 2"....apart from the game sucking. Re-spawning sentry points, Kilometres of nothing but irt raods, cliffs and bandits who had nothing better to do than ambush you when trying to catch up to a moving target. All very tiresome.

Like most people I was a bit skeptical when I heard about FC3 at first but after all those awesome trailes I converted, the game looks just like a Far Cry game is supposed to look like. At this point it seems miles better than Crysis.

The problem with travel in Far Cry 2 is the fact you couldn't go 100 feet without an enemy jeep firing on you.

That is one of the main reasons why I got bored playing the game. You drive around for hours, and there always seems to be some idiots following you. As soon as you get out of your car, BAM, you get run over.

I always took the boats, fast to get around and avoid the enemy, until the last chapter when they using mortars on the boats, then it was driving again,a good game and lots of spirit but the ending was rather sucky, you die or you go to prison, the multiplayer was a lot of fun though.
Far cry 3 will be so much better and with coop it will be awesome!
