Wasteland 2 threatens turn-based perma death

Brian Fargo of inXile Entertainment has confirmed that his studio's Wasteland 2 project - handsomely funded by Kickstarter - will be kicking it (pun!) old school. That means we'll fight turn-based style.

It also means they'll enjoy seeing us cry tears of sorrow as our party members can suffer permanent death. Our NPC chums will carry both advantages and disadvantages, reveals Fargo.

He says they're mindful of keeping the turn-based combat as fast as they can by 'trimming the fat'. The good news is that we know it can be done, thanks to Firaxis' XCOM.

"We will indeed have perma-death in the game," said inXile and RPG veteran, Brian Fargo. "If you make a bad decision and get a party member killed, they won't come back. We committed to creating an old-school RPG experience and we are definitely looking to make this a hardcore experience."

"Once you’ve recruited a companion NPC into your party, you now control them in combat along with your other rangers. We have over 30 skills that can be acquired in the game and no one ranger will be able to be effective in all of them.”

"Success in the Wastelands is centered around creating and using a team that works well together based on the strategy you're using," he said. There's no immediate revelation to the choices you make: "I might also add that many of the choices the player make might not be felt for many hours later. This is another way of making the decisions in Wasteland 2 permanent as players have to live with the outcomes they create."

If combat is going to be turn based, I hope it's going to be similar to combat in XCOM : Enemy Unknown.

Yeah, me too. I'm not usually a fan of either turn-based or permadeath combat, but XCOM has me hooked so THAT plus Fallout has me excited.
