I would have thought more ppl would enter this also. IE9 seems to have issues posting comments, but I'd assume ppl would email and complain, or just use Chrome or Firefox or something.

IE9 is not completely crappy anymore, still prefer other browsers but IE9 is perfectly passable.

Thanks for the stats, Kres and I'm not surpised many have bought into the flase advertising that Chrome is the best around - it is slow and resource-heavy.
I mostly use IE8 as it is still the only browser that supports Google Toolbar...

For me these "built-in browser features" just don't cut the mustard, and I use Google Toolbar quite a bit (far more than Yahoo). Still, IE8 is no longer supported for many games including "BF3" so I have to resort to FF, which to me is slower than IE (go figure), to boot up the game.

One thing FF has over IE at present, though, is the reduced number of pop-up ads (a vicious trojan that is impossible to get rid of) and no certificate errors that plague IE8 and 9. It is not, however, impervious to the Google Re-direct Virus if you are unlucky enough to have picked up that one. Only way to get rid of it is to wipe your hard drive and start over.

Bottom line, though is that many of us cannot post on SI using IE9.

My kids managed to get Google redirect on my PC, but I was able to remove it with a few sweeps with a small selection of antimalware programs. At least, it no longer shows up on scans and Google has worked as intended since then.

On choice of browser; honestly I don't care. If it lets me look at webs and click all the things then I'm good. I do tend to use Chrome, but often it's just a matter of which icon my mouse is closest to at the time, which is how I found out that I was unable to post here with IE9.

I've used many anti-malware programs as well as followed the steps outlined by many sites to try and get rid of it, but it just won't go (including SDkiller, Malwarebyts Anti-malware, Spybot S&D, SUPERAnti-Spyware and the like).
Do you have others that you've used that WERE successful, as the Re-Direct virus has been "taught" to recognise most anti-malware and anti-virus programs?
I know it's generally picked up using P2P services but then several legitimate programs use torrents for their patching (Digital Solutions for one) and ModDB use torrents for Mod downloads. That's how I believe I got it.

Using FF now, and the only hassle I've had so far is the "Pop-Up Adware" virus.

Your list covers everything I used. It took a few sweeps in a row, but it's no longer presenting a problem. idk, maybe I had a different version of the redirect, or maybe it got cleaned out coincidentally while I was scouring away other kid-grime. Maybe it's just playing possum so that I'll stop hunting it down ;P

I do know SDKiller cleaned or replaced some files that it then nominated to delete in a subsequent pass after running Malwarebytes (again) and rebooting (again). After that I rebooted and no programs found any problems and I haven't seen any issues since.

Thanks mate. Unfortunately SDKiller found nothing on my system, though I know there are two viruses, that I've mentioned, that will not budge. The issue is very much reduced since I've changed from IE to FF but the STEAM is absolutley stuffed with both viruses affecting it. Might try deleting and re-installing that program.

@Hero if you can find the special virus you can usually find a specific tool that is made to remove only that virus. These programs you simply download, print out the instructions since you usually have to go intoa fully disabled safe mode and remove a lot of parameteres yourself and then run the program and then boot back up into safe mood a and run again and then it should be removed.

For me personlally - one such virus means clean it - back important stuff and suffer a long weekend with much coffee and ill temper reinstalling my system.
Thankfully - it's been awhile since I needed to do that...

Forgot to mention that a lot of the times you need to disable and remove your system restore points since the viruses usually likes to hide in there and you won't be able to clean them properly!

@Hammerjinx: hehe no not related to competition in that way at all. I'm a huge fan of the series. Played em all. Recently though, I liked the depth of UFO Afterlight the most. Awesome game. Having said that, didn't played other UFOs in THAT series. Anybody played others and are they good (Aftermath?).

I had a hard time getting into Aftermath. It just didn't feel right, and the early (tutorial) missions just felt too lame and restricted. It might have been alright, and you could argue that I didn't give it a fair go, but I had a lot of games on the go at the time and it failed to impress in the first hour or so.

Same with Apocalypse. I played that a fair bit more than Aftermath, or even Afterlight, but I never really liked it much. It felt dumb going from a whole planet to one city, and I thought the new graphics were worse, and it didn't feel nice.

After TFTD nothing in the genre felt good like that until Jagged Alliance 2. I enjoyed the greater tactical flexibility, and the range of weapon types.

I also liked UFO:AI. The flamethrower added some real wow for me. One revision messed up the graphics for me though, so all the maps were too dark and the shadows were totally black, and I kinda stopped paying attention to the progress over there.

Still... There'll always be a soft spot in my heart for XCom. Nothing like getting your squad massacred by an ill omened grenade as they debark the skyranger, only to have the sole survivor wipe out the entire alien force, returning to his fallen comrades to loot their ammo time and time again until his revenge is complete.
