The first Assassin's Creed 3 DLC is non-canon to avoid "breaking fanbase"

What? You mean this never happened?
"The Tyranny of King Wasington", the first major downloadable content pack for Assassin’s Creed 3 will unsurprisingly by non-canon, according to Ubisoft. Considering the subject of the DLC in which George Washington declares himself King of the United States and becomes a villainous tyrant, it's hardly a shock.

Lead designer Steve Masters stated that it was to avoid a broken fanbase.

“For me, the DLC has always been a touchy thing for putting important story moments into. Ultimately it fractures the audience and makes it really difficult for people to keep up with what is the canon of the series,” he noted.

Basically, the DLC is a fun what-if scenario. “For us, we want to have a little fun with it,” he explained, “and have a less serious experience, a less earnest experience, and setting it in an alternate history environment gives us room and freedom to play around with things in a more whimsical manner.”

“We think people are going to enjoy it, have fun with it – we’ve just got to remember it’s not part of the canon, it’s just there as something for players to enjoy.”

Assassin's Creed 3 is due to be released next week on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Ugh, while this probably is great to play, I still really hate this "develop DLC before the game is even finished to make more money" thing that has been going around for the last two years.

But this isn't even the worst, the worst is when they snip out parts of the actual game to sell as extra content. Then I usually don't buy the game at all. I'm fine with special weapons,helmets,... that are included with pre-orders though.

Interesting, but a strange idea this early. I'm looking forwarfd to the historical narative of the period, certainly not a fantasy piece that detracts from that.

I have to agree, there are quite a few games now that you can play, but you always find something to be missing that you can't explain. Then a DLC comes out, and you have to pay to see that rest of the story. That also quite bugs me, but I don't mind DLC's that add equipment, or stuff like Arena maps.
