Max Schaefer of Runic Games says he hopes to bless action-RPG Torchlight II with a set of creation tools not dissimilar from Mojang's Minecraft. He'd love the "building and resource aspects" to translate.
It would make the ARPG experience more than "just wandering from one monster to the next" and smacking them on the head. Schaefer wants a greater sense of permanence.
The designer admits everyone at Runic Games has their own ideas about where to go with the action-RPG genre, but he'd personally love to give it an injection of Minecraft.
“What I’d like to see personally is to get the building and resource aspects of Minecraft and put them into an ARPG, just so it’s a little more than just wandering from one monster to the next and hitting them," Max Schaefer told in an interview.
"Your character has permanence, but you don’t have anything like property or anything that you’ve built right now in our game that lead to any sense of permanence. So I’d like to explore that a little bit.”
“I think everyone at our office has lots of ideas and if you talked to all thirty of us you’d get thirty different visions – which is cool," he continued. The team is a "long way from exhausting the possibilities" with ARPG. Already Minecraft is taking on something of an action-RPG role with its adventure mode so it wouldn't be too much of stretch?
