Players who have attained Black Ops 2 legally won't have their stats reset at launch if they play the game before its officially released.

Black Ops 2 goes on sale at midnight tonight. Treyarch director David Vonderhaar discussed plans for early players on Twitter:

"FAQ. Will people be reset? A. Read the previously linked Security/Enforcement policy. Unless you are a bad person doing bad things, no."

Some retailers have broken the street date, but users won't be punished for this. Vonderhaar confirmed Treyarch will know if you've picked the game up by illegal means.

"We know if you cheated. GG SCRUB CHEATER. DQ PERMA-BAN."

PC users will also see the game's FOV upgraded from 80 to 90 post launch.

Who's picking this up, then?

Attained illegally or not that's an unfair advantage... But meh I won't be picking this up until good reviews come out and christmas has gone anyway.

Well the game has already been pirated, with torrents already live, so plenty are finding out for themselves if it is any good. I myself don't see why, if there is going to be this mini-patch they didn't just make it an open FOV, or do they think that gives some players an advantage over others? It's something, I suppose...but I'll pass altogether.
