Pachter: PlayStation 4 out 'October or November 2013'

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter looks to the months of October and November next year for a launch of Sony's PlayStation 4 platform. That would be the next-gen that 'doesn't exist'.

Unofficially it totally exists. Pachter believes Sony doesn't want to be "behind Microsoft again," and so will move quicker on PS4. However it "isn't likely that they will launch earlier" due to software.

Sony need to give studios a chance to build up a sizeable stable of PS4 launch titles, as otherwise it looks weak and will be terrible for sales and momentum.

"I don't think Sony wants to launch behind Microsoft again, so I'm confident we'll see a PS4 in October or November 2013," analyst (Magic 8 Ball diviner) Michael Pachter told Play magazine.

"It isn't likely that they will launch earlier, as it doesn't make sense to get out too far in front of software, and I'm pretty confident that few developers have been working on PS4 games for more than a year or so. Holiday 2013 will be a comfortable window for Sony, and will give them a chance to get a head start on Microsoft."

The sun won't set on the PlayStation 3 though, much like the PS2 continued strongly for years.

"The PS3 probably has a solid three years left for sales, so it should make it comfortably to a 10-year life span," he added. "There are a lot of people who are uncomfortable spending $250 for a console, so I think price cuts to the $199, $149 and $99 will extend the life of a console." PS3's launch was branded 'arrogant' as Sony debuted with a high price.

Interesting to see if this can turn the tide for Sony's for waning reputation. If they can get it out before the XB720, which would be a feat, it just might.
