Square Enix re-release original Tomb Raider games through Steam

In the run up to 2013's Tomb Raider from Crystal Dynamics, publisher Square Enix has decided to overload our senses with six doses of Lara Croft nostalgia. Available at $9.99 / €9.99 / £6.99 each.

That means you don't need to try and hunt down that 1996 disc of the original MS-DOS running Tomb Raider. We can take on dinosaurs, mansion training courses and the end of world digitally.

By Square's own admission fans of the series have had to make do with "a half-complete collection" with Anniversary, Legend and Underworld the only titles on Steam.

Now we can finally have the entire catalogue available to us in modern times, where those round flat things with a hole are shunned in favour of digital downloads. This means that Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider 2, Tomb Raider 3, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (IV), Tomb Raider: Chronicles (V) and Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness are on Steam.

"Lara Croft's humble beginnings drew us into her epic adventure to recover a mysterious artefact from the lost tomb of Qualopec. With a ground-breaking blend of 3D exploration, puzzles and platform elements, we witnessed the birth of one of the most iconic heroines of all time, which set a precedent for many different games to come," blogged Square.

Tomb Raider releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC March 5th, 2013. Careful, those pixels look sharp.

Cool idea, but bloody expensive for these ancient titles.

I just saw this yesterday, and I am quite amazed. These are such classic titles, and it suites me perfectly if they get uploaded into the Steam database.

There exists already a box about 2 or 3 years now and it sold here for 30 euros, but if you play it again i think the game engine is rather outdated, thank god you can save anywhere and not on certain Diamond points like psx,but still they are classics and Tomb Raider Anniversary is probably the best because it has levels from all the Tomb Raiders and has a not annoying game engine!

Played it and loved it. Had trouble in the past to complete the first Tomb Raider, so at least Anniversary helped me to get a feel of the story.

Yeah, there's not a lot to recommend TR1 over TR:Anniversary when they are the same price. Nostalgia maybe? I think a lot of people would be surprised how rose coloured their memories of the poly count is.
