SEGA teams up with Games Workshop to develop Warhammer games

SEGA announced today that it's entered an agreement with Games Workshop to allow Creative Assembly to develop video games based in the Warhammer universe of fantasy battles.

A new development team has been set up at Creative Assembly's UK studio to work alongside the existing Total War, Alien IP and Mobile teams on the first Warhammer title in the deal, scheduled to launch from beyond 2013.

“With this year being our 25th anniversary”, said Tim Heaton, Studio Director at Creative Assembly, “it seems fitting for us to embark on such a dream project with such a well-established partner. The incredibly rich and detailed Warhammer world is something we grew up with, and has left an indelible imprint on us as both designers and gamers.”

“We’ll be doing the Warhammer universe justice in a way that has never been attempted before. We’re bringing those 25 years of experience and expertise in extremely high-scoring games to bear, delivering a Warhammer experience that videogamers will absolutely love.”

“We have enormous respect for SEGA and Creative Assembly and have felt for a long time that the combination of the enormously rich setting of the Warhammer world, and their stunning development talent is a match with huge potential,” said Jon Gillard, Games Workshop's Head of Licensing. “Now that we’ve managed to bring these two giants of gaming together it is safe to say that some truly amazing products are going to be unleashed as a result. We are excited at the possibilities, and are enthusiastically working with the team at Creative Assembly already.”

This first Warhammer game joins Total War: Rome II and the untitled Alien IP as one of five projects currently in production at Creative Assembly, now one of the largest developers in Europe.

Those were the only Segas you played? You've missed out on some good old games. Not that it matters, they, like everyone else in the gaming industry, has gone way downhill.

I remember those days.... But, some of the newer games, I have noticed they don't tell you the controls at all. I'd prefer being told controls I already know than not being told controls of which I do not know.

well i guess that depends most games tho have key configuration so it shouldn't be a problem

i also don't mind it if they say that once like on the first level to get you started but if you end up facing the end boss i do ask why its telling me the controls becuz at that time you prolly are aware of the game mechanics and controls

Some tasty titles to look forward to, and 2013 is shaping up to be a big year for CA and Sega. Then again, 2012 was supposed to be a big one too, but it's been pretty meh up till now.

I know this can fail spectacularly but I choose to be positive about it in this case :)

DoW2 was a big disappointment for me for abandoning it's strategy part that's why a potential of getting a grand scale Warhammer game seems even more exciting.

"DoW II" stomped all over the original in my opinion. Made it much more up close and personal. Besides, having the two games together, and their sundry EP's you had the best of both worlds.
With CA at the helm, you can be assured of some "Total War" style battles I'm sure.

I liked DoW2 a lot, but there's no doubt it's more tactical and less strategic. The smaller scale is also an issue, and discourages building a cheap squad to throw in to "scout" the enemy position. I also miss drop-podding a bunch of dreadnaughts onto the enemy infantry mid battle.

yeah DOW2 is good but i abandoned some races like my favourite the Tau they did add a commander hero on survival but thats all so i hope that they maybe find a better balance on tactical and strategical part of the game and lets the other races tag allong too

With the new engine I don't think it could have been anything else than squad size. It was a damn fine effort though. "DoW III" will hopefully bring the best of both worlds, whenever it might appear.
Relic's focus on MP was my biggest disappointment with "DoW 2" and was also quite evident with "Space Marine", a focus I don't agree with. MP in the original was great, except for the baseraping Space Marine Assault squads. The original was a great MP battlefield in teams, my favorite being the Necrons.

Necrons... lolz so easy to play with in my opinion you just dance over the enemy the entire time unless you play with the eldar or Tau i find Necrons very hard to defeat

and im not gonna tlak about that necron lord damn damage tankwhore lol only explosives to keep em stunned and down prevented that one doing damage...

The Mp in DOW2 is ok too bad it was a focus as stated above it still got me to play it for quite a bit of hours tho and the MP experience only unlocked cosmetics(tho at some point i wished i could chose which one to have and the ability to activate abnd deactivate them)

40K Total War would be interesting. It'd be a bit like the old Epic scale table top games. Troop movement across the planet would be an issue - realistically you'd be able to move troops anywhere in a single turn, barring anit-air installments.

Fantasy Battles as per the news above would be easier to conceive, but magic could make it interesting.

About air assets in W40K, I'm sure they could only be used as an optional air strike, taking place as it would on a planet that might not support air vehicles. Orbital drops would be the deployment method, and some interesting new naval units could be imagined.
I've played the fantasy setting as well in "Rise of the Rat" or whatever it was called and the other PS1 title. Great games, so I too would be happy with either...
...preferably both.
