Crytek boss wants 32GB RAM in next gen consoles

In a recent interview, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli seems to have confirmed the rumor that the next-gen consoles will feature 8GB of RAM, because he states that he wants to see 32GB of memory.

Of course, it seems developers are never satisfied with memory, and Yerli stated, "you can never have enough memory."

He went on to complain about the limitations of consoles.

"Memory is the single most important thing that is always going to be underbalanced - I've never seen a console where the memory was the right balance," Yerli said, "Xbox 360, underbalanced. PlayStation 3, underbalanced. Simply because memory is the most expensive part, hence I wish there would be cheaper ways of doing memory so that memory doesn't become an issue anymore."

He went on to note, "If they find ways to cheapen the cost to a degree they could triple or quadruple their memory. Just say, 'Hey we're going to have 32 gigs of memory'. That would be quite amazing because memory can do so many more techniques and tricks."

Both the Xbox 720 (or Infinity) and the PlayStation 4 are expected to have a Holiday 2013 launch.

Isn't RAM basically the cheapest it has ever been?
35€ for 8GB is extremely cheap and that's a retail price, I'm sure they can can get it in bulk for 20€ or even lower. 16GB should be perfectly doable this generation.

No doubt about that really, 8GB is something you get in a 6-700 euro PC together with the dedicated video card and quad core processor. And that would also be retail. Let's see some effort chaps.

You don't play PCs on your TV. You don't need as much RAM when you have a unified architecture.

Ehhhhhh, kinda questionable that really. Sure it'll be more efficient to develop for and you won't have as much wastage from the PC programs running in the background....but games on PC are already more than happy to slurp up the 8GB. If you want any sort of progress then you should at least allow for 16 I feel.

Oh and if I could easily link my PC to my tele for couch games, I'd done that ages ago ^^

16GB is all you really need these days. Anything more is just a waste. Having said that, I only have 8GB, and with a tweaked Page File for Virtual Memory I don't use most of it.

Well that's cause you games can't use it, because they needed to work on consoles for years. I would argue that it holds back development is all.

As I said somewhere else, if consoles weren't around the PC would be staggering in it's complexity and the applications available would be mind boggling, not to mention the videogame scene. If only PC's were available, not consoles, there would still be a massive revenue as who knows what the modern PC would look like in that alternate universe.
