[UPDATE: The Fall 2012 Content Pack is now free.]

Tripwire Interactive has announced that Red Orchestra 2 will enjoy a free weekend on Steam starting tomorrow to celebrate the release of the Fall 2012 Content Pack. Tripwire will also be selling the DLC at 75% tomorrow.

The DLC includes a new map Barashka which originally was in the original Red Orchestra, allowing combined arms combat with villages, bridges and a river crossing. The map will support the Territory and Countdown game modes.

There will also be a patch that fixes some community requirests like the ability to walk while actively firing machine guns from the hip; increased stamina pool in Classic; chat system refinements and other fixes.

If you haven't already tried it, I can definitely say you're not wasting your time to give it a try. Put a fair amount of hours into this and that was before the patchwork. :)

On the steam page it says Barashka is free

"Just Updated
Fall 2012 Free Content Pack:
This pack, free to everyone who owns the game, adds a new map and also has big updates for the Countdown Game Mode:..."

They must have changed their minds last minute.

I am very much in the mood for a World War II game, but not convinced yet by this game. Is is like Battlefield, and multiplayer only, or can I play singleplayer as well?

It has a SP campaign as well but it's mostly just MP maps played against bots. There is a story to every map though.
Considering that it's free you only need the bandwidth for it :):

Exactly, just give it a try, what could possibly go wrong? ^^

Not sure how long, once again, this will last after the sale particularly with alternate servers with different maps being run for, and by, the long time faithful community. Been on the fence with this since it's release but it's worth a go over the weekend, if only to see and feel what it's like compared with the first one (which I have to say I didn't much enjoy). Strange that you have to alter scripts to play a game with bots though and it's not an in-game feature (instead of the SP content).

If SirRoderick says that it is a good game, and recommends it so, then it must be an outstanding game to play.

Well, good to hear I have some amount of reputation in your mind *is flattered*

Just remember that I can't account for personal taste :)

No you can't, and after giving it a go I quickly uninstalled it. I'm afraid playing something more akin to "ArmA II", sans current gen graphics, and with no 'bot' option left me cold.

Should have started out in arcade mode silly, nothing at all like ARMA this game, not even close. But again, personal taste :)

Didn't see the Arcade option in the setup for the Campaign, but overall I'm feeling rather meh about all shooters these days.

Well there's your problem, it's a multiplayer shooter silly, the bots are just there for knowing which way to point the gun ^^

I like playing with bots. At least they don't camp and snipe for the entire match or abuse you for not doing what they want (for their own benefit), and also gives you the chance to try different tactics, roles, weapons etc. in virtual safety (no stat changes, no hassles from supposed team members...).

None of those things seem a problem for me in this game...camping loses the match for example. Like, directly loses it. It's attack/defense based after all
