Iron Tower working on HP Lovecraft inspired Turn-based RPG

Iron Tower announced last night that it's currently working on a second project, a turn-based RPG that is currently in pre-production and has been named Cyclopian, inspired by, and to a large extent based on, the stories and mythos of Howard Phillips Lovecraft that takes place in 1923 Western Massachusetts.

Cyclopean is the working title for a turn-based RPG project currently in the design phase. The game is inspired by, and to a large extent based on, the stories and mythos of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, and takes place in 1923 Western Massachusetts. Based on the strength of the concept and some samples of the writing, Vince has offered me the lead designer position for this second team of Iron Tower Studio. I’m calling this second team “Team Omega”.

I chose the name Cyclopean because it was arguably Lovecraft’s favourite adjective, meaning “big” in the context of his stories, not “one-eyed”. I like the way it sounds and I don’t want to call the game “Shadow Over Arkham”, “Look Out, It’s Cthulhu!” or something else entirely predictable and lame.

The player starts out in Lovecraft’s most famous fictional town, Arkham. Over the course of the game the player will travel to several other locations in and under the State of Massachusetts, and come in contact with cultists, law enforcement, hapless citizens, shadowy organizations, criminals, otherworldly creatures, and if he’s lucky, horrors beyond imagining. The game will concentrate on dense, quality writing in Lovecraft’s style, thrilling dialogue, and stimulating turn-based combat versus people and other things. Emphasis will be placed on quests with many possible solutions and outcomes. Players will not be restricted to fighting evil, but may ally themselves with those who wish to bring back the Great Old Ones, as well as various other organizations. Details to follow. The player will be able to pick up autonomous NPC support, a la Fallout, during the game. Influence over ally’s basic AI will be available, but equipment changes will be limited.

A concern already raised is that Lovecraft’s canon does not suit itself to a computer game. I think the locations, creatures and atmosphere established by Lovecraft are entirely adaptable, not just as a colourful background to the same tired old RPG themes, but as an entire game experience. Any established body of work translated to a computer game, or any other form of media, will have to be bent somewhat to accommodate its new form. It is my belief that a more faithful translation of Lovecraft’s world can be implemented as a fun and worthwhile CRPG.

Finally, here are a few things which will not be in Cyclopean: immortal and chatty NPC’s with abandonment issues, elves, giant rats, sewers, black and red hellscapes, and Monty Python references.

No official website has been opened yet, but we will keep an eye on future developments from Cyclopean.

The lack of giant rats is deemed to be a good thing by this reader...

Now I remember where I know of Lovecraft. Read his book "Mountains of Insanity" (at least that's my attempt to translate it from my language). Great book, great author. If I'm not mistaken.

Well, I'm not that old, so I must have missed its ancestor sometimes in the past... Maybe I can make it up by playing this one.

Lovecraft was extremely prolific, so even if you haven't directly read any of his tales, you would almost invariably have watched something in horror movies or television that came from his writings. The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Tales from the Darkside, etc. TV series have all borrowed from him.

Ooooh spookily fun and almsot clapping hands in excitment. Then again, I'm sceptical at the same time. I hope it won't end up being one of those lame excuses of a Lovecraftian game that blows over the top and tries to have Shubbnigoraths with laser beam eyes and trained kung fu panda's. That said, I guess it only is to sit down and wait until more info. Turn based. *yummy*

I'm a big Lovecraft fan.
I'm a big Turn-Based fan.
I'm a big RPG fan.

I hope they keep it open ended. I hate rpgs that are stuck on rails.

Lovecraftian-style game have always done well, but I'd like to see more literary geniuses used as a basis for games (R.L.Stevenson, Orwell and Poe). We've seen the disaster of adapting modern authors (Clive Barker's "Clive Barker's Jericho" by Clive Barker for instance), so get back to the Classics of horror.

Good one Knave, but I was thinking more along the lines of "1984". But "Animal Farm" could be scary, couldn't it? Talking animals starting a Communist revolution would scare me to death...

I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye on this one :)

I was a big fan of Lovecraft when I a kid, and it seems like ages since I've played a good "serious" RPG on the PC. A bit of a change from the console JRPGs I've mainly been playing for the last few years! :o)

Haha. And imagine EA's Neverland?
