THQ exec: Call of Duty "stamped out memories" of great shooters

THQ global communications boss Huw Beynon denounced the Call of Duty series in an interview, stating that Call of Duty's repetitive formula "stamped out" what made shooters great.

According to Beynon, “I think it’s probably very true to say that there’s reaction to what used to be a small subset of the genre of a military shooter. It’s ballooned and mushroom-clouded to almost define the genre and kind of stamp out memories of what I remember being great about first person shooters, whether that was Half-Life, System Shock, or GoldenEye—where a FPS didn’t necessarily have to involve military material, it just meant an invitation to a fantastic other world, which to me was always the point of video games in the first place.”

He went on to say that gamers are tiring of the formula of the "military superman" and are looking to new IPs - like THQ's own Metro series, and expressed admiration for Dishonored.

”I’ve hugely enjoyed (Dishonored) and I’m thrilled that they’ve had success with that—it’s probably the game that’s interested me most this year and am glad to see it get the critical and hopefully commercial success that it deserves," he praised.

Metro: Last Light is due to be released on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this coming March 2013.

Sooner or later you will, I thought the same about pizza but for the last 5-6 years I haven't eaten it more than a few times a year.
And I think we should be able to agree that pizza is better than CoD :P

Regarding the news, considering who's saying this it kinda sounds just like PR, hating on CoD is popular after all and get's you and your own games in the news :)

Not that I disagree with him, this modern shooter genre has gotten as stale as WW2 shooters used to be all those years back.

I completely agree with him. I used to love CoD, but got tired of it. It used to be a great title. Now it's become nothing more than a high budged US military propaganda.

I agree with him too, i got tired of the CoD franchise after CoD 2. I started looking towards games like ARMA, Metro and Stalker instead, games that have alot more challenge and depth to it than the whole "grab a rifle and kill gazillions of scripted enemies while wearing Power Armor MK2" thing.

Cod 4 was the best and they are still releasing maps for this title, some are exact copies from other Cod titles and are free!

I enjoyed and at times still do enjoy Call of Duty, but none the less I also have to agree that the title is becoming repetitive, the game is great, but I haven't even played MW3 yet.

I still think "CoD" has legs, and "BlOps II" has pushed the limit of the engine as far as it will go to my mind. Personally it all ended at "CoD 2", but I enjoyed helping my son play "CoD: MW" which is probably the best of the series all around. The original, though is still to my thinking the best of the best and never to be equalled.
As for how the CoD" franchise has been handled, well it has Bobby Kotick written all over it, the man who publicly announced that he had no hesitation over sacking original Infinity Ward Designers Jason West, Vince Zampella - in fact he appeared to enjoy it.
For me "Spec Ops: The Line" has been the last of the modern military shooters with any imagination, with "Future Soldier" sealing the fate of yet another Ubifail franchise.
We'll see what "MW4" and "BF4" have to offer, but i fear it will be more of the same formula with graphical enhancements and a few extra bells and whistles.
As far as THQ goes, well there's always "W40K: Fire Warrior" in their Hall of Shame. So all in all, enough with the finger pointing.

Or they get banned, as the "NRA" is busy shifting the blame for Americans killing each other from Gun Laws to "CoD" (specifically targeted). I think they forget that the majority of their deployed servicemen (and some women) actively play the game.
At least, and I say this with some trepidation, it has not become a "F2P" browser game....yet.

Interesting video journalist piece from TotalBiscuit. Cheers Lich. I must admit I too enjoyed "C&C:Renegade", though it was universally panned by critics.
As Frank Zappa once said of music journalists, "Rolling Stone" in particular:

"They are those who can't write, interviewing those who can't talk, for those who can't read."

Could be applied to journalism in general these days.

I agree and am glad for both Metro games, but THQ can't really say this since Homefront is one of the worst offenders of "COD-copying" alongside EA and the recent Medal of Honors.

I personally clapped-out of the COD series with Black Ops. I thought it was utterly terrible, the worst in the series. It was literally ALL just "follow this guy, don't explore or lead at all". Which is a shame, 'cause I liked both World At War and Modern Warfare 1.

While I agree with the sentiment - and seriously missing shooters of the old school like Quake, Doom and Duke Nuke 'em Star Wars, Halflife and even Quake 2 - those games also got worse and worse with time. People wanted to add so much more to them instead of letting the gameplay, level design and music speak for itself. In that aspect I blame Halflife for the decline.
The story instead of just coolness and concept destroyed a lot of the old FPS games. The Strogg idea for Quake as the main villains destroyed what was cool with Quake. The idea of killing of a Lovecraftian enmemy and blasti9ng skeletons in gothic style castles were much more fun. Quake 4 just got plain silly and repetetive as crap.

The best military shooter for me was still the gold old Return to Castle Wolfenstein - a game of its peak of FPS games. Story, gameplay and some gothic silliness combined. The multi player part was also fresh, ground breaking and seriously fun!

COD started of fine but after first modern warfare - it just went south with story and gameplay. The MP part and the overly please the console huggers simply made too many steps away from the PC gamers to be seen as a serious game and the gameplay mechanics, controls etc - are not for top notch reflexes - nor is the game that much of a tactical one and strategy is fairly simple. It is the generalist trying to please everyone that makes it a big seller - loved for the instant by masses but so easily forgotten with the next edition for the lovers of "new" slapped on to something.
It is not all terrible - but unfortunately it is pretty much designed to be a perfect commercial hit - just like pop-stars. It lacks soul and when you dig deep into something and find the money grubbing black heart of the core - you kinda get disgusted with yourself for buying into it - and then completely stops caring.

And THQ - what brand is slapped on Homefront - eh? - EH? FAKKING EH? The worst game of them all!!!Grrr
