Dune 2 now free-to-play as browser-based game

What many consider the very first real-time strategy game, Westwood's Dune 2 is now free-to-play as a browser-based Javascript game.

Dune 2 was released back in 1992 as an MS-DOS game, and later ported to such machines as the Commodore Amiga and the Sega Genesis. It featured three unique sides, each with their own specialized units, with resource gathering and a simple tech tree.

Gamers interested in playing a piece of videogame history can check out Dune 2 at play-dune.com.

I love the books, never played this. I'm really curious how well it matches the source material :P

BTW, is this the Warcraft 2 engine?

Oh well, the only Dune that somehow even a bit close to books is Emperor:The Battle for Dune. This one however is hold just a name of houses and some units from the books.

Hey it was great in it's day, but I'd much rather see "Emperor: Battle for Dune" released on GOG.com.
I'd have to say that "Emperor" came pretty darn close to the Lore, Chosen...as close as a Westwood RTS could come anyway...heavy on combat, light on everything else.
Damn, I spent so many many on that game...seems like only a few years ago now.

ah Emperor... nothing like a bunch of sardaukar marching to their enemies nasty bit of troopers quite a damage output takes ages to train...

what do i like also oh yeah... IX lol their crafty scuicide drones are fun i used to place them all over the AIs base on areas he didn't patrol then made them explode when my army approached... not to mention the illusion armies i made with them...

@unsilviu Dune 2 used its own engine. Also it was the foundation for the Westwood's C&C and RA series. Played Dune 2 back in the days because of a challenge. A mate of mine told me that you can't finish the game with House Ordos. Proved him wrong.

But, i'd actually like to see all the Westwood's Dune games on GOG, plus Cryo Interactive\Virgin's Dune 1 (the one from 1992)

Hero, the thing is, that Ordos didn't exists at all and Atreides didn't use much of the tech, because of human-machines war in the past.

Well it is in the non-canon Dune Encyclopaedia (1984) by Willis E. McNelly but you're right, the Mercantile House has never been mentioned in any of the novels. Bloody Russians, no sense of humour ("This Day in History" posts should balance thing for you).
I am presently grinding my way through Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's prequels (haven't reached "The Machine Wars" saga yet), and delving into Leto Atreides's motives and machinations. I don't think Westwood was too whimsical in adding to Frank Herbert's canon though, as his son certainly has expanded upon it and quite imaginatively too.

PS. (and off-topic) "Sword of the Stars II:Enhanced Edition" is only $4.95 on Gamersgate for the next 22 hours.
Hey, it's Sci-Fi so not too off-topic:)

Dune 2 was one of the first games that I've played, and one of the main reasons why I got into gaming! Not to mention Dune 1.

Darn it Jonah, what with this and the "AoE II" post you are having me take a very nostalgic trip back in time, some 25 odd years (and sometimes they WERE odd). As Steely Down puts it: "Reelin' in the years....":)

BTW, anyone else who played the original "Dune 2", and I suspect most did not at launch (unless you're oldies like Jonah and I), find "Dune 2000" to be actually stripped of it's original charm?
I mean, all it was was a Windows-based version of the original, with a few video cut scenes. The latter for me seemed to detract from the original's Sci-Fi comic-book feel, though it was to become a staple of latter "C&C" games.

Just musing, before I head out tonight for New Years...

Dune? As in the film DUNE! The game is just a tad bit beyond my time, but that I've seen that MOVIE. Man, weird as Hell, even for the 80's.

I've played Dune 2000 for 10 minutes. Animations and stuff, real bad. Couldn't do it.

It was pretty dreadful, wasn't it Kres?
As for the film "Dune"...well it was David Lynch, after all...that is until, they destroyed it by making the "Extended Cut", which was so bad, that Lynch had his name removed from the credits. Three hours of appalling dreadfulness.
Have to say Toto's soundtrack is still one of my favourites, and Brian Eno's contributions were great ("Prophecy Theme" - brilliant).

Time for another remake of the "Dune" novel, and not as a TV miniseries as they did with "Children of Dune", although that might work. Peter Jackson...as soon as you've finished "The Hobbit" trilogy, jump on in and make the "House..." prequel trilogy and "The Machine Wars" Trilogy....after "Dune".
